Finland Tours & Holidays

Finland is known for its vast pine, fir and birch forests, its countless lakes and, of course, for Lapland, rumoured abode of Santa Claus, while the first port of call for most visitors is the nation’s capital, Helsinki, an attractive city with some fine neoclassical buildings. Visit Uspenski Cathedral and the remarkable Temppeliaukio, or Rock Church, quarried out of the natural bedrock, or simply relax in leafy Esplanade Park. Further west, sail through the 20,000 islands of the Turku Archipelago to the city of Turku, home to a 13th century castle and the Sibelius Museum, dedicated to the Finnish composer.

As the capital city of Finland, Helsinki is a vibrant and bustling destination, full of history, culture, delicious restaurants and fabulous shopping.

A significant portion of the city centre was designed by Carl Ludwig Engel, featuring a number of grand buildings in the neoclassical style situated around the Senate Square.

Probably the most impressive of these structures is the Helsinki Cathedral, with its bright white stone exterior and green domes. There's also the Government Palace, an imposing building that is currently used as the offices of the prime minister, the chancellor of justice and the ministry of finance.

Other popular attractions for those on touring holidays in Finland include the National Museum of Finland, which is situated in a stunning building and displays artefacts from various periods of history, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the University of Helsinki Museum.

If you're looking for a bit of retail therapy, head to Aleksanterinkatu Street. Not only is this area chock-full of fashionable clothing shops and high-end department stores, but it's also a great place to see street entertainment like jugglers, magicians and musicians.

Alternatively, the Kaisaniemi Botanic Gardens and the Esplanadi Park are lovely places for nature lovers, as well as those seeking a bit of tranquillity and fresh air.

The northernmost region of Finland, Lapland is famous as the home of Father Christmas. However, there's plenty more to see.

Experience the spine-tingling beauty of the northern lights - one of nature's most impressive displays. Or simply explore the vast landscape with its lakes, mountains and wildlife, including bobcats, bears and wolverines. It's also a wonderful location for bird watching and fishing is a popular activity.

During the winter, Lapland becomes a winter wonderland covered in deep blankets of snow and popular activities include cross country skiing, snowmobile tours and dog sledding.

How about a taste of eastern Europe?
If you're travelling to Finland on holidays in Europe, you'll have a variety of options when it comes to transportation, including coach tours and air travel within the country.

Ocean cruises that tour the Baltic Sea often stop in Helsinki, giving you the chance to see the capital, and some of the beautiful coastline, as well as other eastern European destinations, such as St Petersburg, Riga, Stockholm and Gdansk.

You can opt for a no-fly cruise - these depart from the UK, meaning your touring holiday can start before you've even left British waters. Or you could select a cruise that departs from within Europe - generally Copenhagen.

Small ship cruises are also available for those who prefer a more intimate setting. A short journey across the Baltic from Helsinki to Tallinn could be a good addition to a holiday in Finland, or you could opt for a longer cruise to port cities that the larger ships cannot access.
