Step back in time in Split
Nothing quite prepares you for the city of Split. Originally built as a retirement villa and complex for the Roman Emperor Diocletian, Split today is a thriving city with streets that were once palace corridors, and bustling shops and restaurants built into the original palace walls, arches, columns and facades.
Treasures of Dubrovnik
A walk through the smooth marble streets of Dubrovnik’s Old Town reveals historical treasures including the elegant, pale stone Franciscan Monastery and Museum, the stunning baroque Cathedral of the Assumption and the beautiful Rector’s Palace, now Dubrovnik’s Cultural History Museum.
Sights and sounds of Zadar
Zadar is a city full of ancient and modern surprises. As well as Roman ruins and the historic Sea Gate, the town has a flight of stark white steps descending into the sea. The steps are perforated, creating a so-called ‘sea organ’ which seems to sigh and whistle with the motion of the waves.
A stroll through Šibenik
Lots of people pause in Šibenik on their way to Krka National Park, but the town itself is well worth exploring, even if only to see the world’s largest stone church built without brick or wooden supports. It’s an atmospheric place for a stroll in the sunshine, perhaps stopping to take in the views of the sparkling blue bay from the medieval old town.

Opatija is a fashionable holiday resort that has welcomed many famous personalities, including central European aristocracy, Puccini, Chekhov and James Joyce. Today is free to explore it yourself, Take a dip in the picturesque bays or enjoy the streets of Opatija and neighbouring Volosko, a pretty fishing village just a short walk along the 12-kilometre promenade with mountain views across the Adriatic.

Day 3 - Plitvice Lakes
Leaving Opatija, travel first to one of the treasures of the Balkan Peninsula – the UNESCO-protected Plitvice Lakes National Park. Here a local guide will lead a tour of the lower lakes and the surrounding peaceful woodland, home to numerous birds and mammals. During your visit, you’ll also enjoy a boat trip across the lakes, offering a different perspective of this remarkable landscape. After free time for lunch, continue south to Zadar.

Day 4 - Zadar
The central Dalmatian town of Zadar is situated on a sheltered peninsula with a picturesque harbour. This morning’s walking tour reveals the city’s many Romanesque and Byzantine buildings including the Church of St Donatus and Cathedral of St Anastasia, all of which bear testimony to Zadar’s colourful past. This afternoon you’re free to enjoy the town at leisure, and this evening we’ll dine together in a local restaurant.

Day 5 - Šibenik - Solin

Day 6 - Split
Discover Split’s historic heart, located within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, on a guided tour. As its name suggests, the Roman Emperor Diocletian who was born in Solin, built the Palace in the 3rd century AD, a combination of an Imperial Villa and Roman stronghold that forms one of the world’s most impressive Roman monuments. Through the centuries and under various rulers, including the Byzantines, Venetians and Austro-Hungarians, a city blossomed within the grounds of this World Heritage Site. You’re free for the rest of the afternoon.
