Activ Sunny Hotel Sonne, Kirchberg (4-star)
Enjoy a day in the presence of the magnificent Wilder Kaiser Mountains. This silvery range dominates the Alps along Austria’s border with Germany. Our journey takes us through the pretty lakeside town of Walchsee and the market town of St Johann in Tirol, each surrounded by an undulating wilderness of lush meadows and forests, plus the distant peaks of the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Wilder Kaiser Mountains. We take time to wander down the cobbled streets of Kitzbühel, before joining a horse-drawn carriage ride through this gorgeous alpine area, and then continue along the scenic Brixen Valley to Kufstein, a medieval town with its own impressive fortress. It is home to the Heroes’ Organ, the largest freestanding organ in the world. We return to our hotel and, following dinner, enjoy a traditional Tyrolean folklore evening.
Rattenberg - Alpbach
This morning we travel to the medieval walled town of Rattenberg, the smallest city in the Tyrol, laid out before a 10th century castle and renowned for the exquisite, locally made glass and crystal that fills its shops. We then journey on to the picturesque village of Alpbach, voted Austria’s most beautiful village for its traditional wooden architecture adorned with colourful flowers. It is a delight to explore both the village and the surrounding hills, with hundreds of miles of hiking paths leading into the uninterrupted alpine scenery.
After breakfast, our ‘Sound of Music’ tour takes us to some of Salzburg’s historic sights and locations of this iconic film, such as Leopoldskron Palace, Frohnburg Palace and the impressive Mirabell Palace Gardens, all rich in a history entwined with the arts. Lunch will be taken at a local restaurant in Salzburg before you spend the rest of the day exploring this great city on your own. You may wish to spend some time discovering the life of Mozart, Salzburg’s most influential composer.
Lake Achen - Pill
Enjoy a leisurely morning before we travel to Lake Achen, the largest lake in Tyrol. You may choose to take a cruise on the lake to further appreciate the breathtaking views of the Inn and Ziller Valleys before we continue to Pill, where we visit the Tyrolean Schnapps Museum to learn how this local ‘fire water’, a Tyrolean speciality, has been produced over many centuries.
Innsbruck - Ammergau Alps
Our journey today takes us to Innsbruck for a guided tour of this Tyrolean capital. We delve into the Gothic Old Town, seemingly unchanged since the Middle Ages, and take in the most famous landmark, the ‘Golden Roof’, where 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles have covered the roof of this historical residence for over 500 years. Enjoy some free time exploring the city before we continue into the Ammergau Alps region and our second hotel. We head to a local restaurant for dinner tonight.
Hotel in Ammergau Alps
Following breakfast we take the short journey to Oberammergau and wander through this historical town with elaborately painted houses and shops selling an amazing array of wood carvings, a handicraft that has been perfected here over 500 hundred years of practice. Enjoy lunch before taking your seat in the custom-built theatre for the first half of the spectacular Passion Play, accompanied by a 65-member orchestra and 48-person chorus. A three-hour break will allow plenty of time for dinner before we return to our seats for the second half of this incredible production.
