Summary
Oberammergau is famous for its decennial open-air staging of the Christian Passion Play, which involves much of the town. It also lies close to some of western Austria’s most spectacular highlights. On this memorable tour we take a horse-drawn carriage through the gorgeous Kitzbühel Alpine area, stroll around the unfeasibly picturesque village of Alpbach and explore the historic cities of Salzburg and Innsbruck. And we finish by taking our seats at the Passion Play, a moment in history.

Kitzbühel
Enjoy a day in the presence of the magnificent Wilder Kaiser Mountains. This silvery range dominates the Alps along Austria’s border with Germany. Our journey takes us through the pretty lakeside town of Walchsee and the market town of St Johann in Tirol, each surrounded by undulating lush meadows and forests, plus the distant peak of the Kitzbüheler Horn.
We take time to wander down the cobbled streets of Kitzbühel, before joining a horse-drawn carriage ride through area. Then, we’ll continue along the scenic Brixen Valley to Kufstein, a medieval town with its own impressive fortress.
We return to our hotel and enjoy a traditional Tyrolean folklore evening.

Rattenberg - Alpbach
This morning we travel to the medieval walled town of Rattenberg. It’s the smallest city in the Tyrol, with a 10th-century castle and many shops selling exquisite, locally made glass and crystal.
We then journey on to the picturesque village of Alpbach, voted Austria’s most beautiful village for its traditional wooden architecture adorned with colourful flowers. It is a delight to explore both the village and the surrounding hills, with hundreds of miles of hiking paths leading into the uninterrupted alpine scenery.

Salzburg
On our ‘Sound of Music’ tour, we’ll see some of Salzburg’s historic sights and locations from the iconic film, such as Leopoldskron Palace, Frohnburg Palace and the impressive Mirabell Palace Gardens, all rich in a history entwined with the arts.
The rest of the day is free to explore this great city on your own. You may wish to spend some time discovering the life of Mozart, Salzburg’s most influential composer.

Lake Achen - Pill
Enjoy a leisurely morning before we travel to Lake Achen, the largest lake in Tyrol, with breathtaking views of the Inn and Ziller Valleys. We’ll then continue to Pill, to visit the Tyrolean Schnapps Museum to learn how this local ‘fire water’, a Tyrolean speciality, has been produced over many centuries.

Innsbruck - Ammergau Alps
Our journey today takes us to Innsbruck for a guided tour of this Tyrolean capital. We delve into the Gothic Old Town, seemingly unchanged since the Middle Ages, and take in the most famous landmark, the ‘Golden Roof’, where 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles have covered the roof of this historical residence for over 500 years. Enjoy some free time exploring the city before we continue into the Ammergau Alps region and our hotel.

Oberammergau
We take the short journey to Oberammergau and wander through this historical town with elaborately painted houses and shops selling an amazing array of wood carvings, a craft that has been perfected here in 500 hundred years of practice.
The afternoon, take your seat in the custom-built theatre for the first half of the spectacular Passion Play, accompanied by a 65-member orchestra and 48-person chorus. A three-hour break will allow plenty of time for dinner before we return to our seats for the second half of this incredible production.
