In Shropshire, the rich coal-fired heritage of the old towns gives way to miles of beautiful sweeping countryside scattered with hills, castles and villages. From the traditional market town of Whitchurch, we’ll wrap up warm and explore this picturesque area together. Christmas Eve - Gladstone Pottery Museum
We’ll head for Stoke-on-Trent today, for a visit to Gladstone Pottery Museum. Discover the city’s world-famous pottery-producing heritage, as we explore the museum on a guided tour. We’ll see how bone china tableware was made, in Gladstone China Works’ original workshops and giant bottle kilns. There are fascinating historical maps, photos and documents to learn more, plus pottery demonstrations if you want to see the real thing in action. After a light lunch, we return to the hotel for a free afternoon. Maybe enjoy the hotel’s facilities or explore the beautiful area.
Christmas Day - Whitchurch
Start your Christmas celebrations with a morning at leisure. A traditional Christmas lunch is served with all the trimmings, followed by the opportunity to watch the Queen’s Speech if you wish. The afternoon is at leisure.
Boxing Day - Llangollen Railway
We’ll visit the delightful Welsh town of Llangollen for a trip on the heritage railway. The steam hauled train follows the River Dee through the Dee Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty along the base of the Berwyn Mountains, to Corwen. We return to the hotel for the afternoon. Perhaps visit the market town of Whitchurch, just a mile away. You’ll find independent specialist shops, lovely coffee stops and traditional pubs. It’s the only town in Shropshire to have been continuously inhabited since Roman times. Although little of these times remain, half-timbered buildings and the Georgian church still decorate the town.
