Stay and Explore
In Shropshire, the rich coal-fired heritage of the old towns gives way to miles of beautiful sweeping countryside scattered with hills, castles and villages. From the traditional market town of Whitchurch, we’ll wrap up warm and explore this picturesque area together. Enjoy outstanding scenery from the window of an old steam train as we chug through the Dee Valley in north Wales. On Christmas Day, we’ll celebrate together with all the trimmings.

Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel & Spa, Whitchurch (4-star)
Christmas Eve - World of Wedgwood Museum
Wedgwood is a household name, brought to us by the astonishing craftsman and cultural pioneer Josiah Wedgwood. We head to the World of Wedgwood Museum to see how his influence has lasted for nearly 260 years. This unique record of ceramic production in Britain reveals changes in fashion with cutting-edge designs (please note that the Wedgwood factory itself is closed today). Enjoy cream tea before we return to the hotel for a free afternoon. Maybe enjoy the hotel’s facilities or explore the beautiful area.
Christmas Day - Whitchurch
Start your Christmas celebrations with a morning at leisure. A traditional Christmas lunch is served with all the trimmings, followed by the opportunity to watch the Queen’s speech if you wish. The afternoon is at leisure.
Boxing Day - Llangollen Railway
After breakfast we’ll visit the delightful Welsh town of Llangollen for a trip on the heritage railway. The steam hauled train follows the River Dee through the Dee Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty along the base of the Berwyn Mountains, to Corwen. We return to the hotel for the afternoon. Perhaps visit the market town of Whitchurch, just a mile away. Here you’ll find independent specialist shops, lovely coffee stops and traditional pubs. It’s the only town in Shropshire to have been continuously inhabited since Roman times. Although little of these times remain, half-timbered buildings and the Georgian church still decorate the town.
