Borneo is an island for adventure. Its interior is all about mountains, ancient rainforest and ‘Jungle Book’ landscapes, while the coast is ringed with powder-soft beaches and coral reefs. Mount Kinabalu National Park is a must-visit, with its diverse tropical flora and towering granite peaks, as is the wildlife-rich area along the Kinabatangan River.
Speaking of wildlife, most visitors come here for that very reason – and we don’t blame them. Borneo’s rainforest residents include baby-faced pygmy elephants, pig-tailed macaques and proboscis monkeys. The most famous of all, though? The orang-utan. These incredible creatures are found in only one other place on Earth. Seeing the orang-utans of Borneo in the wild is a real – and rare – privilege (as Dame Judi Dench found out on her fantastic ITV documentary).
