We Love

Feeling like intrepid explorers as we glide through the glistening iceberg-filled waters of Antarctica, seeing how many seals, whales and penguins we can spot.

Summary

This is an adventure of two halves. On this South American tour savour the tropical heat of two of South America’s most awesome cities - Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. Gasp at the views from Sugarloaf Mountain and soak up the tango-infused atmosphere of Buenos Aires. We’ll be wowed, too, by the mighty cascades of Iguazu Falls on this holiday to South America. Then voyage to the white wilderness of Antarctica on Hurtigruten’s sophisticated expedition ship and experience its calming remoteness amongst crisp blue icebergs, and penguin and whale-filled seas.

We visit the Brazilian side, then cross over to Argentina and after a train journey and short walk, we’ll be met by the thundering cascades at Devil’s Throat canyon. At 80m high, this is an immense waterfall and the park’s largest, and we’ll spend time admiring its sheer power.

  • Day 9 to 13

    Days 9-13 - Antarctica

Spend five incredible days in one of the most remote places on earth, Antarctica. We step ashore many times to discover breathtaking scenery, get close to native wildlife, and enjoy kayaking and hiking. Weather conditions will determine the exact nature of your programme. Safety is paramount and the ship’s captain will decide the itinerary during the voyage. Possible landing sites are:

Deception Island, South Shetland Islands: A captivating volcanic island, home to a natural harbour, an abandoned whaling station and volcanically warmed sand and waters - sometimes possible to swim in!

Half Moon Island: One of the most beautiful areas of the South Shetlands, this majestic island is home to a large chinstrap penguin colony as well as Antarctic terns, kelp gulls, snowy sheathbills,

Wilson’s storm petrels and several species of seal.

Yankee Harbour: Arrive in this small inner harbour, to discover a large colony of gentoo penguins estimated to consist of around 4,000 breeding pairs.

Neko Harbour: Nestled in the innermost part of Andvord Bay, Neko Harbour is one of the places where you can place your feet on the Antarctic mainland. An array of wildlife including minke whales, gentoo penguins and leopard seals call it home.

Paradise Bay: Magnificent glaciated mountains, ice floes, breathtaking ice cliffs and icebergs. Disembark to admire the icy scenery and discover the typical Antarctic wildlife residing here, including gentoo penguins, crabeater seals and whales.

Wilhelmina Bay: Often named ‘Whale-mania Bay’ due to the large numbers of humpback whales spotted here amidst the outstanding scenery.

    • Several landings in Antarctica (mornings/afternoons)

    MS Fridtjof Nansen (4-star)

  • Day 14 and 15

Days 14-15 - Crossing the Drake Passage

We continue our adventure with two days retracing our steps back across the Drake Passage.

This sea passage was notorious among the early polar explorers and is a unique voyage which only a few have the chance to experience. Join the onboard lectures, or simply take the time to reflect on your incredible expedition.

    MS Fridtjof Nansen (4-star)

  • Day 16

    Ushuaia - Buenos Aires

Our Antarctic voyage may be over, but we still have some more to see. We disembark in Ushuaia and head to the airport for our flight to Buenos Aires. Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel.

In the evening, we’ll head to one of the city’s most traditional tango houses and immerse ourselves in the rhythmic beats of the country’s most famous dance. We’ll dine on local cuisine and enjoy an authentic atmosphere and watch as the dancers light up the room. A truly wonderful way to end our South American adventure.
