Oh, what a perfect moment, sitting at a bar table in front of the cathedral in Syracuse on a warm September day… I had a delicious almond granita and a traditional brioche with a 'Tuppo' to accompany it. For many Sicilians, this is the perfect summer lunch. Sicily is a wonderful island, rich in art, history and beauty, but the food is truly incomparable! Street food is my favourite and I love sharing this passion with my customers.

Sicily
Kicking out from the toe of Italy’s boot is Sicily – a little island with a lot to offer. The interior is a mix of rugged mountains, vineyards, citrus groves and hill towns, while the coast offers beautiful beaches and relaxed seaside resorts. When it comes to the sights, you’ll discover the influences that have shaped Sicily over the centuries. The Greeks left their mark in the form of theatres and temples, most famously in Agrigento and Taormina; and around Palermo, you’ll discover glittering churches decked out with golden mosaics by the Arabs and Normans.

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast
Sorrento sits on a clifftop above a series of tiny pebbled beaches and bathing platforms, with spectacular views across the bay to mighty Mount Vesuvius. Delve into the mazy backstreets and you'll find ivy-draped trattorias, gift shops and hole-in-the-wall cobblers crafting leather sandals. To the west of Sorrento lies the Amalfi Coast - highlights include pastel-hued Positano and pretty Amalfi town. Out in the Bay of Naples are the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida, all well worth exploring.

There’s little Lake Orta, where time-warp towns move at a go-slow pace and walkers are rewarded with hillside sanctuaries (and panoramic views). Lake Maggiore has more of an old-money feel to it, with grand lakefront hotels and palazzo-topped islands, while Lake Garda is all about variety – think crenellated castles, vineyards, Roman ruins and lemon groves.

Spring
Late spring is a wonderful time to visit Italy – the temperatures at this time range from a pleasant 15-20°c with little or no rain. Not only are there fewer crowds, but this is also the time to see flowers and fruit in bloom, and wildlife starting to come out of hibernation.
Summer
Even though it’s peak season from June to September, summer months in Italy are glorious – particularly by the coast and on the islands, where there is a refreshing breeze. Sicily is stunning in summer – think glistening blue seas and the fresh fragrance wafting from olive trees.
Autumn
October is a great time to head to southern Italy – warmth still lingers from the summer months, and the grape harvest is well underway. Further north, it becomes a little chillier – so you may need to bring warmer clothes or wear layers.

If there’s one destination you can find lots of crowd-pleasing dishes, it’s Italy. Pizza, pasta, olives, tomatoes, focaccias, an abundance of seafood, gelato, cheeses, cured meats – the list goes on. Oh, and not forgetting the fine wines and excellent coffee. And depending on what region you’re in – local cuisine can differ from city to city and town to town. For instance, in the Italian Lakes, lemons from Lake Garda are some of the best in the world. In Puglia, you must sample taralli – crispy rings of bread dough dipped in olive oil. On the Amalfi Coast, spaghetti with clams is a speciality.

There are no hard and fast rules about leaving tips in Italy and in many cases, it’s not expected. However, if you’re happy with a service that has been provided to you, then leaving a tip of around 10-20% is a generous gesture and one that will be most appreciated.
