Day 2 Washington DC
This morning we enjoy a tour of the city commencing at Washington’s cultural and political centre, the Mall. Dominated by the Capitol Building, the fine buildings are surrounded by two miles of graciously laid out gardens, at the end of which stands the Lincoln Memorial. A short stroll takes us to the home of every American President after George Washington, the White House. This afternoon is free to explore at your leisure. There will be a visit this evening to Georgetown, a fascinating community of exquisite homes, many belonging to the Washington elite.
Day 3 Washington DC - Baltimore - Williamsport
Today we travel north to Baltimore, situated at the northern-most tip of the Chesapeake Bay and with a reputation of combining big city atmosphere with small town charm. Its waterfront area offers a vast choice of restaurants, promenades and a beautiful harbour complex. We continue north through the pastoral delights of Pennsylvania and our overnight hotel, the Hampton Inn Downtown (3T) or Best Western Williamsport Inn (3T).
Day 4 Williamsport - Niagara Falls
We continue to Niagara this morning and, crossing the Canadian border, we are faced with the natural wonder of Niagara Falls. On arrival we will be free to discover the awe-inspiring Horseshoe and American Falls. The Falls can be viewed from the vantage point of the Skylon Tower, or from the underground tunnels that run behind the Falls. Our hotel for the next two nights is the Sheraton on the Falls (4T).
Day 5 Niagara Falls
The day is free in Niagara to further enjoy the Falls and gardens or the unusual attractions that the town also offers, such as the Waxworks and the Guinness Book of Records Museum. The casino is also worth a visit which, apart from the acres of one-arm-bandits, is home to several good restaurants and an evening cabaret show.
Day 6 Niagara Falls - Corning
We depart this morning and travel to Rochester and the George Eastman House and International Museum of Photography. Hosting the world’s leading collections of photography and film, enjoy the beautiful landmark Colonial Revival Mansion and Gardens that were home to George Eastman between 1905 to 1932. We then take a visit to the Corning Museum of Glass, the world’s largest glass museum featuring 35 centuries of glass artistry, live glassblowing demonstrations, hands-on exhibits and 18,000 square foot Glass market. Tonight we stay at the Hampton Inn Corning-Painted Post (3T+).
Day 7 Corning - New York
We continue our journey this morning to the world’s most exciting city, New York, for a tour that will include all the famous places such as Wall Street, Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building and Central Park. Having checked in at the Sheraton New York Times Square (4T) or Hampton Inn Times Square (3T), your conveniently located base for the next two nights, you have the late afternoon and evening to settle in and find your bearings - easy to do with the simple grid system of numbered streets running east to west and avenues running north to south. Tonight you may want to wander over to Times Square and the theatre district where the choice of restaurants is unrivalled.
Day 8 New York
Free day in New York to examine some of the sights in more detail, such as the Woolworth Building (the tallest before the Empire State was built), Chinatown, SoHo and Greenwich Village, all in Lower Manhattan. Central Park is Uptown and covers an incredible 850 acres. In Midtown on the East Side is the United Nation’s Building, Grand Central Station (familiar from so many films) and the New York public library with its twin stone lions outside. Further west, Fifth Avenue’s fine shops, including Saks and Tiffany’s, Radio City Music Hall and the Rockefeller Center can be found.
Day 9 New York - In flight
Morning to enjoy New York and some last-minute shopping before transferring to JFK Airport for a direct, scheduled Virgin Atlantic flight to London.
