Hawaii (The Big Island)
Aptly named for its physical size, the Big Island contains some of the top tourist attractions in Hawaii. Tours of Volcanoes National Park will introduce you to Kilauea – one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Located to the south of the Big Island, visitors flock here to witness the process of creation, as 230,000 to 600,000 cubic metres of molten rock spews from Kilauea each day. However, it is far from the only attraction on offer in the National Park. The Thurston Lava Tube, discovered by local newspaper publisher Lorrin Thurston in 1913, is an incredible 450ft tunnel in the rock through which molten hot lava once flowed. Thankfully for visitors, the lava is now diverted through other tubes as you wouldn't want to dip your toes in this viscous, 1,000 degrees-Celsius liquid! Another big draw (in every sense of the word) on the Big Island is Mauna Kea – a nearly 14,000ft peak. Although Everest is regarded as the tallest mountain on earth, when measured from the ocean floor, Mauna Kea extends 33,600ft – dwarfing its Himalayan rival. Its flat summit and excellent environmental conditions make it one of the foremost stargazing locations on earth – the sunsets are pretty spectacular too!
Maui
A short hop away from the Big Island is Maui, ‘the Magic Isle’ (and our first taste of the islands on our Hawaii tours). Again, the nickname is a fitting one, as Maui is blessed with beautiful scenery and has been frequently voted as the ‘Best Island’ by Conde Nast readers. In lush green Iao Valley State Park you will find soaring tree-lined peaks, including the oft-photographed Iao Needle – a 1,200ft spike of rock that stands separate from the surrounding hills. Maui is also home to man-made attractions such as the Maui Ocean Center, which gives you a chance to experience Hawaii’s aquatic wildlife without having to don your scuba gear. There you can come face-to-face with a scalloped hammerhead shark, immerse yourself among the sea life in a 54ft viewing tunnel and visit the green sea turtles in their lagoon.
Oahu
Known as ‘the Heart of Hawaii’, Oahu is home to the lively state capital Honolulu, with its high-rise buildings and spectacular seafront location. It is also an island where the course of Hawaiian history was determined. In downtown Honolulu you will find a statue to the great King Kamehameha, who helped to unify Hawaii in the early 1800s and create the strong sense of identity retained to this day. The Nuuanu Pali Lookout along the Pali Highway was the site of the Battle of Nuuanu in which the King won his campaign to unify the islands. The spectacular cliffs which afford a wonderful panorama today spelled the end for many of warriors in the battle, who plunged to their deaths.
From London to Honolulu is approx 15 hours.
