Feltre - Paneveggio Nature Reserve
This morning we head out to discover the hilltop village of Feltre. Huddled around its castle and backed by the mighty peaks of the Dolomites, Feltre is wonderfully picturesque and atmospheric. Wander along the quaint cobbled streets, taking in the frescoed Venetian palaces and the buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. Our visit coincides with the weekly farmers’ market. This afternoon, we’ll explore Paneveggio Nature Reserve. Feast your eyes on sprawling green meadows, thick Alpine forest and rugged mountain views. This reserve embodies the charm of Northern Italy. With our guide, we’ll learn about the history and geology of the area - keep an eye out for famous red deer grazing in the meadows.
Marmolada Glacier - Fedaia Lake
Queen of the Dolomites, Marmolada glacier is the highest peak of the mountain range. We’ll explore the area with a guide today. In the winter, heavy snowfall transforms this mighty peak into the most beautiful skiing area. In the summer, the lush slopes are perfect for hikers and offer fantastic views across the region. The area is so spectacularly beautiful; it’s often used in photoshoots. In fact, it features as a backdrop in ‘The Italian Job’. At the foot of the mountain, the sparkling blue waters of Lake Fedaia reflect the surrounding mountains. Take a moment to immerse yourself in the perfect peace of the area. The azure water might look inviting, but be warned - it remains fairly fresh even in the summer months! Perhaps stretch your legs and walk the breadth of the lake by walking across the winding dam.
San Martino Castrozza
San Martino is the picture of an Alpine ski resort. We’ll take the hairpin mountain roads to get there, but it’s worth the journey. The town’s wooden-fronted buildings blend seamlessly with the surrounding nature and the mountains are so close, you feel like you could reach out and touch them with your hands. In the winter, the town is blanketed in snow and buzzing with après ski activity. In the summer, it’s a hub for hikers, rock-climbers, mountain bikers and general adventurers wanting to make the most of the spectacular scenery on the town’s doorstep. We’ll enjoy a guided tour of the area, including the town and the Rolle Pass. The panoramic views of the rolling green pastures are absolutely breathtaking.
Primiero San Martino di Castrozza
Today is completely free to explore Primiero San Martino di Castrozza at your own pace.
Today we make our way down to Bassano, straddled on the banks of the river Brenta in the Alpine foothills. The full name of the town is Bassano del Grappa, after the famous spirit that originates here. We won’t miss an opportunity to have a taste, but there’s also so much more besides to enjoy in this lovely Italian town. Explore the charming cobbled streets and admire the Palladian architecture in its old centre. The Ponte Vecchio (old bridge) has stood proudly in its current form since 1569 (although previous designs have been documented as far back at 1209). We’ll stop by a local distillery for a tasting of grappa and enjoy an authentic pizza lunch. Outside Bassano, sprawling vineyards are the exclusive producers of Italian Prosecco. We’ll visit one to learn about the process of making this famous wine and enjoy a tasting paired with local specialities.
Primiero San Martino di Castrozza
Today you have the choice to spend the day as you please in Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, or you can join our optional excursion to Cortina d’Ampezzo. One of the oldest ski resorts in Europe, upmarket Cortina d’Ampezzo is dotted with grand old hotels dating from Victorian times. The centre of the town is cobbled, car-free and offers a slightly different ambience to the other Alpine towns we’ve visited, but the mountainous backdrop is just as spectacular. As you wander, you might recognise parts from the James Bond film, ‘For Your Eyes Only’.
