Star decoration in a Christmas market, Vienna, Austria
17 June, 20203 minute read

'Tis the season: where will you celebrate Christmas this year?

How would you like to spend Christmas this year? Shopping for gifts at traditional Christmas markets? Bundled up for a festive walk through one of the UK’s historic cities? Or perhaps you’d opt for a dose of winter sun somewhere really exotic?

Christmas can be a stressful time of year and sometimes it passes by in a flash of shopping and wrapping and planning before you’ve even had the chance to say ‘Merry Christmas’. If you want to skip the stress, it’s not too late to plan a seasonal sojourn and really revel in the magic of Christmas. We have a whole collection of Christmas getaways, so whatever your Christmas wish we can make it happen.

Explore Christmas Markets

Infused with aromas of gingerbread, mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, Europe’s famous Christmas Markets are sure to get you in the festive spirit. From choosing unique gifts to tasting regional specialities, or simply discovering a new city under the twinkling glow of Christmas, there’s more than enough festive cheer to go round. A treat for the eyes and the heart at any time of year, Vienna is particularly special at Christmas time as the city simply radiates with Christmas cheer. Combine majestic baroque streets and imperial castles with sprawling Christmas markets on Vienna Christmas Markets.

If its tradition you’re after, it doesn’t get more traditional than Germany. On our Berlin Christmas Markets tour, feast on currywurst and glug gluewhein (mulled wine) as you browse craft stalls and watch jugglers and fire-eaters – all to the sound of a traditional choir.

If you can’t choose just one destination, you’re in luck. On Traditional Christmas Markets on the Rhine, you’ll cruise along the River Rhine taking in big cities like Koblenz and Frankfurt and quaint villages such as Mainz and Rudesheim. At every stop you’ll be treated to new markets offering different crafts and local specialities to taste.

UK Festive Breaks

Sometimes it’s easy to overlook the joys on our very own doorstep, so the perfect festive trip needn’t be a plane ride away. Our festive short breaks in the UK reveal the seasonal splendour of some of our most historic cities, picturesque villages and rural landscapes – and there’s plenty of Christmas cheer to go around.

On our Christmas in London break, spend a very special Christmas Eve singing  carols at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. Or opt for Norfolk Christmas to enjoy an outstanding seasonal performance in Thursford. Perhaps head north to Newcastle for a ride on the world’s oldest railway, the Tanfield Railway – enjoy the views with a mince pie in hand.

Christmas in the Sun

Imagine returning from India just in time to showcase your photos in front of the Taj Mahal at the table on Christmas Day. Or bragging about your South American adventures to your friends on New Year’s Eve. Make it a Christmas to remember by jetting off on a once-in-a-lifetime pre-Christmas holiday.

Perhaps you’d prefer to spend the festive period at home and instead recover from the Christmas chaos with a post-Christmas trip to New Zealand – guaranteed to keep the January blues away. Combine the snow-capped Southern Alps, fiords, glaciers and natural hot springs with laid-back cities on our The Best of New Zealand tour.
