The best wines from Europe with Laithwaites

Did you know there are an estimated 28 million wine drinkers here in the UK? Plus with over £2billion worth of wine exports from Europe alone, with wine destinations including France, Italy and Spain at the top of the list, we really do like a glass or two. From the sweeping slopes of Austria’s infamous Wachau Valley and the steeply terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley in Portugal to the sunny and dry landscapes of Puglia in Italy - there are so many wonderful wine producers and family-run vineyards to choose from. But with infinite possibilities comes difficult decisions. What are the best wines from Europe?

Luckily, we have the knowledge and wisdom of Laithwaites’ wine expert Greg Roberts, who took on the challenge of choosing six delicious and very drinkable wines from across Europe. Greg is Laithwaite’s Wine Educator and he really knows his stuff. He says:  “When it comes to the wines I like to drink, for me, it’s all about what’s in the glass (rather than on the bottle) that counts. Fancy labels and well-known producers are all very nice, but I’m looking for maximum enjoyment and great value. All the wines I’ve picked out, deliver exactly that. Quality focused producers, some from famous places, some not – but all mega tasty!”

Kutjevo Graševina 2019 – Croatia

£11.99 per bottle

“A well-regarded white wine that is clean and refreshing. If you like the classic Pinot Grigio then you’ll love this. Graševina is the queen of white grapes in Croatia. From an 800-year old winery, this is one of the best wines from Croatia. It has notes of lemons and pear, with a lovely sea-breeze freshness and just a hint of sweetness, and goes superbly with a garden salad.”

The Boar Riesling 2019 – The Rhine, Germany

£12.99 per bottle

“I adore Rieslings which often get a bad rap. This is my go-to wine. I love The Boar. Produced by Weingut Leitz their vineyards sit on a sweet spot on The Rhine, meaning their vines are on south-facing slopes and get all the sunshine. Refreshingly vibrant, this is a dry Riesling with a floral character and a honeysuckle aroma. Because of its pure acidity, it goes well with fatty foods such as pork and also counter balances zesty acidic dishes such as ceviche. Not only is this wine exciting but really affordable, too.”

Réserve Champalou 2019 – Loire Valley, France

£16.49 per bottle

“This is an award-winning wine - a classic Chenin Blanc that will appeal to Sancerre and Chablis lovers. It has a delightful honeyed flavour and apple notes. Because it is ever so slightly sweet, the Réserve Champalou is perfect for dishes that have a kick including Thai green curries and fried seabass. A truly outstanding wine.”

Quinta do Espirito Santo 2018 – Libson, Portugal

£10.49 per bottle

“With a complex structure and strong flavours, the Quinta do Espirito Santo is big, punchy and smooth to drink. Damson fruit flavours gives it a velvety finish and I think this is a charming and good priced bottle of red. The vineyard which is close to the Atlantic means the grapes get an intense flavour and works well with strong dishes including meats and stews. If you like Cab Savs, then think of this as the Portuguese equivalent.”

Corsiero Nero Purosangue 2018 – Puglia, Italy

£15.49 per bottle

“Because the grapes are from old vines, it means Corsiero is rich, dark and more concentrated. The dark spicy cherry fruit of Nero di Troia is a terrific southern Italian grape, deeply coloured and full of dense red fruit.  Similar to a Shiraz , this wine is flavoursome – spicy, oaky and with a herbal edge. This is a serious wine and goes amazingly with tomato-based dishes as well as pasta.”

Manzanos Reserva 2011 – Rioja, Spain

£19.49 per bottle

“This is a quality Rioja that is medium-bodied and classic in style. There are flavour notes of leathery, dried fruits, which make it savoury and smoky on the palette. You’ll also enjoy the red berry fruit character, with hints of oak, vanilla and coconut. This is one of Manzanos’ top wines – a Reserva using Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha grapes from their very finest old vineyards. Long aged in barrel, this is a complex red that is stunning to drink. Enjoy!”
