Inspiring spring & summer getaways for 2022

The red list is no longer, borders are reopening and pricey PCR tests have (for vaccinated travellers) been ditched – we’re definitely feeling optimistic about holidays in 2022. Celebrate a new year of travel with a spring getaway, or perhaps treat yourself to a summer trip you’ve been dreaming about for months.

But where to go? We’ve rounded up some of our favourite tours, cruises and destinations for spring and summer, all with dates available for travel in 2022. As there are so many different ways of travelling these days, we’ve grouped them into travel types to make things easier – you’ll find top picks for solo travel, river cruising, escorted and coach tours, and small group tours. All you need to decide is which one you most like the sound of…

Solo travel

Our tours for solo travellers are ideal for those who are travelling on their own, but still want the comfort and company that an escorted tour provides

Trips to Russia from the UK can be complicated to organise on your own, so our Magnificent Moscow and St Petersburg holidays are a fantastic hassle-free option. We chose July for our solo departure – according to product manager Phil, it’s a wonderful time of year to explore Russia. “Surprisingly to many, Russia’s summers are warm and extremely pleasant. July also sees the finale of St Petersburg’s ‘White Nights’ celebrations, where the locals welcome 80 days of nearly round-the-clock light after the oppressive winter – the city really comes alive.”

Of course, solo travellers are welcome on any of our tours or cruises. Holidays to Japan, for example, could be daunting for those travelling alone, but with us, you’ll enjoy an expertly planned itinerary, great company throughout, and the knowledge and expertise (and language skills!) of a tour manager and local guide. Join us in spring to view pink clouds of cherry blossom, or summer for outdoor dining and fantastic local festivals. We do have specific single traveller holidays to Japan, too – for 2022, it departs in mid-September.

River cruises

If there’s one type of holiday that’s really been flying off the shelves for spring and summer 2022, it’s river cruises. Europe is where we base our exclusive-to-Titan cruises, sailing the Rhine, Danube, Main and Moselle rivers, as well as the Dutch Waterways.

The spring cruise season kicks off with our Dutch riverboat cruises, which whisk you away to the multi-coloured flower fields of Keukenhof Gardens. For spring 2022, there’s also a special one-off cruise that includes entry to the Floriade horticulture expo – one of the most renowned gardening events in the world, and something that only takes place once a decade.

Moving through spring and into summer, there are plenty of European river cruises to tempt you on board. First-timers might enjoy testing the waters with a week-long jaunt along the Rhine, while seasoned river cruisers could opt for a longer itinerary that takes in both rivers, or look to explore the lesser-visited eastern stretches of the Danube (home to dramatic gorges, wildlife-rich wetlands and timewarp towns).

Escorted tours & coach tours

Escorted tours have been our speciality for more than 40 years, and we’re incredibly proud to hold the title of the UK’s most awarded escorted tour operator. When it comes to coach tours for 2022, there are plenty of great options across the spring and summer months.

If you’re not looking for sunshine, an early spring favourite is Iceland. The harshest winter weather has passed, but it’s still considered low season, so you’ll beat the crowds. Plus, you still have great chances of spotting the mesmerising Northern Lights. Our 5-day Iceland tours include an evening outing in search of the Lights, as well as excursions to the Blue Lagoon, the South Shore and the Golden Circle.

For later spring holidays, our Italy tours are a great option. Our European product manager, Alison, especially loves Puglia in May: “As well as pleasant temperatures in the early 20s, one of the greatest perks of visiting at this time is that there are fewer crowds, particularly around must-see destinations including the ancient cave dwellings of Matera and the trulli neighbourhoods in Alberobello.” Moving into summer, seaside Sorrento is an ideal Italian spot – our holiday here includes guided tours of the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompeii and Sorrento itself.

If you’re looking for something a bit further afield than our European holidays, turn your gaze across the pond to Canada or the USA. USA product manager Cassie recommends May as a great month to visit the national parks of Arizona and Utah (“the perfect balance of being pleasantly warm but avoiding the scorching summer heat!”), as well as the tropical islands of Hawai’i (“the rainy season has been and gone, and it leaves behind lush landscapes and comfortable temperatures”).

In Canada, our summer escorted tours give you warm, dry weather, beautiful scenery and great wildlife-watching opportunities. Our Journey Through Eastern Canada holiday has a couple of summer departures – great for seeing Niagara Falls at its best and catching a festival or two in the cities.

Small group tours

We know crowds can be overwhelming, which is why our small group tours are a great choice for travellers looking for a more personal experience. These tours have all the same ingredients as our regular award-winning escorted holidays, but with a maximum of just 24 guests (and many with even less). This offers a unique way to travel – from being more flexible to being able to visit places that just aren’t accessible in large crowds.

It's a concept that works particularly well when it comes to wildlife and safari holidays. Game drives and bush walks are much more enjoyable when there’s not a big group of you, and it gives us a much better chance of catching sight of wildlife.

Our Grand Safari Kenya holidays are small group tours, and with departures right across the summer, they’re ideal for a getaway in 2022. Phil cites August as his favourite month here: “It’s when the great wildlife extravaganza of the wildebeest migration takes place in the Maasai Mara; there is no better time to be here.”

Further south, you could discover the boutique lodges and uncrowded national parks of Zimbabwe, or tour four of South Africa’s finest reserves on our South African Safari Adventure.

Although she loves a lie-in at home, Laura is often up and about before dawn on holiday. She’s watched the sun rise over the Grand Canyon, Uluru and Angkor Wat, but her favourite was seeing the first light of the New Year sweeping across the yacht-dotted waters of Sydney Harbour.
