Fast forward to 2021: what travel looks like next year
As countries around the world start to report a gradual return to normality, we can’t help but feel a little flurry of excitement for our future adventures. But when it comes to travel, it’s always best to start with a plan and if you’re feeling a little bit overwhelmed with choice after this lapse of time without travelling, we’ve picked out some emerging trends for the year ahead to get you on your way.
The year of the holiday
We’ve all had to put our travel plans on hold this year, but we’ve found our customers are planning to make up for lost time in 2021 and make next year even better than ever. In fact, 90% of those who have transferred have confidently decided to rebook the same tour next year - and many are choosing to 'double up' in 2021 with once-in-a-lifetime destinations like Japan, Canada and South Africa being top of their list.
With so many people moving their holiday to 2021 already, avoid disappointment on your perfect tour and departure date by booking early. Our Flexi Desposit means you can secure your next holiday with a low deposit of just £49 per person. If your travel plans need to change closer to the time, you can amend the departure date or tour for no additional fee, so you have more control over the when and where.
It’s a rollover
Tokyo’s Olympic and Paralympic Games; Copa America hosted by Colombia and Argentina; the European Football Championships across Europe – just a few of the much-anticipated events that were set to take place in 2020. They’re all on the back-burner for now and organisers are working on postponing them until 2021, meaning next year will be a ‘rollover’ year with more world events than ever.
“With so many extra world events and anniversaries now taking place in 2021, we can expect to see an influx of travellers flocking to these hotspots more than if the events had played out over the two years. This means availability will be at a real premium and prices are likely to increase in those destinations as we get closer to 2021,” says product manager, Cassie.
If you have your heart set on exploring a particular destination next year, our advice would be to save yourself the worry and book early to avoid disappointment. Our Early Bird Price Promise means you’ll always pay a lower price the earlier you book – and if the cost of your tour is reduced after you book, we’ll refund you the difference in cash.
Short haul sensational
Research suggests that those who are feeling a little more hesitant about international travel will start off small and seek out the special experiences on offer in Europe, before committing to a long-haul holiday.
“We will likely see people forgo the long flight and opt for something in Europe,” says European Product Manager, Alison. “Many will feel reassured by being closer to home and, after this period of time without travelling, they might not feel up to the long flight and big time difference. But that doesn’t mean they have to compromise on adventure or cultural highlights; Europe has some fantastic experiences to offer which are often overlooked.”
If your feet are itching for scenic delights, you might opt for Switzerland’s Spectacular Rail Journeys in 2021, which will have you marveling at the beautiful Alpine scenery and breathtaking mountains from your seat aboard the Bernina Express and the Glacier Express.
For an epic adventure practically on your doorstep, you can never go wrong in Italy. From the cultural capital of the north, sweep through the lyrical landscapes of the countryside before landing in the carefree south by way of Rome on our all-encompassing Grand Tour of Italy.
If you’re the type to travel the world in search of rare and wonderful wildlife, you don’t need to travel as far as you think. On our Icelandic Adventure tour, you could spot whales, dolphins and even puffins on a boat trip from Reykjavik harbour.
With so much time spent away from our loved ones during lockdown, nothing makes up for lost time quite like a shared travel experience with your nearest and dearest, once it’s safe to do so. Escorted touring is a fantastic way to travel with extended family while saving yourself the stress of organising it all; you say the word, and we’ll do the work for you. Read a first-hand experience of multigenerational travel on our tours.
The wonders on our doorstep
Being unable to travel abroad for this extended period of time has led many of us to appreciate the wonders on our very own doorstep. Those that perhaps aren’t ready to return to international travel are likely to opt for a shorter break in the UK. We have a whole host of UK Short Breaks to choose from spanning England, Wales and Scotland, perfect for those looking to dip their toes back in.
Small ship cruises trump ocean liners
Long leisurely days on the water; a new destination every day; delicious food and wine to sample – it’s little wonder that cruising holidays have such a loyal following. But in 2021, river and barge cruises could become the favoured choice over ocean cruising for some.
“River and barge cruises are much more focused on the destination, rather than the onboard experience” says Cruise Product Manager, Rob. “Guests are encouraged to spend a lot of their time out in the open and exploring. These cruises dock somewhere new every day and because they drop you right in the centre of town, it couldn’t be easier to just jump ashore and explore as you please.”
These smaller ships have fewer cabins, too, so cruisers will inevitably come into contact with less people than the ocean alternative.
From the coffee-clad highlands of Colombia to getting up-close-and-personal with elephants in Thailand and the exploring the sprawling winelands of South Africa, Natalie is a wannabe-adventurer and finds it hard to pick favourites when it comes to travel destinations. She has a weakness for wildlife and good wine, so her escapades are usually in pursuit of one or the other. As well as writing for The Scenic Route, Natalie also manages our social media channels.
