Best European Holiday Destinations To Visit 2021-2022

With travel on the roadmap to restart this summer, we’re already beginning to see a few trends when it comes to the European tours and destinations people are asking for. Together with the expert insight of our team here at Titan, it gives us a great overview of the places that’ll prove popular over the next year or two. Intrigued? Scroll down for our pick of the best places to visit in Europe for 2021 and 2022.

Romania might not have the headline-grabbing cities that other Eastern European countries have, but its low-key nature just makes it all the more appealing. We’re launching our very first tour of Romania for 2022, and it’s fair to say we’re more than a little excited about it. Combining buzzing Bucharest with Transylvania’s castle-dotted countryside, it showcases the country’s fascinating folklore and colourful past perfectly. If you’re looking for a lesser-known European spot to visit, it’s a great option for a 2022 holiday.

“When I was researching this tour, I was particularly interested in Romania’s royal links. The Tea Room restaurant at Bran castle was created by one of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters, Princess Maria, in recollection of enjoying afternoon tea when she lived in England. And there are links to Prince Charles, too – he visited in an official capacity and was so taken with the Slow Food concepts and strong organic focus that he bought a private property here, which is now run as an eco-friendly nature resort!” Alison, European Product Manager

In our latest travel trends report, Italy nabbed the number one spot on our ‘most booked’ chart. It’s not surprising that so many love bella Italia – there’s something here for everyone. Incredible scenery in the Lakes and along the Amalfi Coast. Greek temples in Agrigento and grand palazzi in Venice. Sicily’s sumptuous street food and Puglia’s deliciously simple cucina povera. Dramatic mountains, soft sandy beaches, olive groves, vineyards, grottos.

If you can’t decide which part of Italy to visit, we’d suggest taking a look at our ‘Grand Tour of Italy’: a two-week whirlwind that takes you from Venice all the way down to Sicily. The highlights are too many to mention here, but a few of our favourites include wine tasting in beautiful Siena and a guided tour of Pompeii.

“Sicily is a wonderful island, rich in art, history and beauty, but the food is truly incomparable! Street food is my favourite and I love sharing this passion with my customers.” Andrea, Titan tour manager

Greek Islands

The Greek Islands have been top European travel spots for decades, and that looks set to continue for 2021. Aside from the universal plus-points (beautiful weather, delicious Greek cuisine and warm, welcoming locals), what we love most about the Greek Islands is the fact that each island is so different. Corfu is lush and green, with a mix of French, Italian and British influences (wander along the Parisian-style Liston and you might spot a cricket match on the green opposite). In Crete, meanwhile, you could spend your days exploring ruins of Minoan cities, peeking inside Byzantine chapels, and admiring breezy, windmill-dotted plains.

Of course, you could always tick off more than one island in each trip – island-hopping is a fantastic way to see more of Greece. Our island-hopping tour focuses on the Dodecanese islands. You’ll start and finish in historical Rhodes, visiting colourful Symi and unspoilt Leros in between. We time our tours for early summer and autumn, taking advantage of blue skies and sunshine but avoiding the searing heat of high summer.

“The highlight of ‘Greek Island Medley’ is a spectacular boat trip from the island of Symi where we sail to Panormitis, famed for its monastery. We then enjoy a beautifully prepared lunch washed down with local wine, under the canopy of olive trees. We even get an afternoon dip in the turquoise waters of St George's Bay. It really is a perfect day.” Geoff, Titan tour manager

The Netherlands

Travel to the Netherlands in 2022 and you could visit an incredible horticulture expo that takes place just once every ten years: Floriade. Based in the small city of Almere, not far from Amsterdam, this ‘living laboratory’ will boast inspiring gardens, thought-provoking exhibitions and pavilions bursting with exotic blooms and plants. The theme for 2022’s event? ‘Growing Green Cities’ – think apartment blocks with ‘living’ walls of plants, and innovative ways of growing fresh produce within a city environment.

Our ‘Floriade and the Delights of the Dutch Waterways’ river cruise includes entry to the expo – as well as a private canal cruise in Amsterdam, a trip to the windmills at Kinderdijk and a guided walking tour of Cologne. You’ll travel to the Netherlands by ferry or train from Dover, so it’s a great option for anyone looking for a no-fly holiday to Europe.

Turkey’s beautiful beaches make it ideal for a fly-and-flop break. But there’s much more to this country than sunbaked sands – those who dig a little deeper will be rewarded with spice-scented bazaars, layers of intriguing history and fascinating tales of courtiers and concubines.

Our 2022 Turkey tour will give you a true taste of the country – we’ll start in majestic Istanbul, then wind our way down to Gallipoli and along the Turkish Riviera. As well as touring incredibly well-preserved ancient sites, you’ll sip proper Turkish coffee in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, enjoy lunch with locals, and learn to prepare traditional dishes.

“Turkey has a remarkable history, from Greek and Roman times to the WW1 history on the Dardanelles and in Anzac Cove. It’s a busy tour, so we offer the chance to extend your stay at a stylish seafront hotel in upmarket Lara Beach – perfect for unwinding.” Alison, European Product Manager

More specifically, the Christmas markets that spring up in the towns and cities lining the banks of the Rhine here. Our 2022 Christmas market river cruises are going like hot cakes, with customers eager to enjoy a festive break in one of the most Christmassy places in Europe. Journeying from the UK to Cologne, you’ll board MS Serenade 1 for a four-night cruise along the Rhine, stopping off at Koblenz, Mainz and Rüdesheim as you go.

Glühwein, stollen cake, gingerbread, bratwurst… there’s so much delicious food and drink to try, you’d be forgiven for skipping dinner once you get back on board. Don’t – not only is the onboard cuisine delicious (four beautifully presented courses every night), but the wine and beer are free-flowing (and included in the price).
