The fight for control of this legendary river was a major reason for the American Civil War, but its French, Spanish and Native American influences still remain strong to this day, as does the wounds from the slave trade. But its past, is what makes the Mississippi a deeply captivating state to explore. Sail on the largest steamboat ever built
Cruising the Mississippi is an incredible experience. Appreciate the passing scenery and get a new perspective from the water, as you spend a week on the American Queen – an authentic paddle wheel boat. The capital of Louisiana is full of surprises. With over 300 years of history, Baton Rouge has an Old State Capitol and a New Capitol – the tallest Capitol in the USA, and we’ll appreciate incredible views across Mississippi. We’ll marvel these famous landmarks and also visit The Old Governor’s Mansion – where you will listen to tales of very colourful characters. We’ll enjoy lunch in the buzzing downtown Main Street Market where there is a huge choice of local specialty restaurants.
Spot different wildlife
The wildlife in the Mississippi is varied and diverse, as it the flora and fauna and on a Mississippi cruise you may well spot plenty. With grass and woodlands, and riverbeds – as well as swathes of wildflowers, pines and evergreens and pretty magnolias. From white-tailed deer, black bears, bob cats, skunks, beavers and racoons to over 400 different species of birds, including the mockingbirds and kites. You may even spot alligators! There are as many as 38,000 gators in the region that live across 408,000 acres of wetlands.
Try some gravy and biscuits
From blue crab and gulf oysters to Mississippi mud pie and fried chicken and okra, there are many culinary dishes that you have to sample when cruising the Mississippi. You will be spoiled for choice on board The American Queen. At the Front Porch Café, you’ll get a choice of mouth-watering dishes including roast prime ribs with roast potatoes and mac and cheese. And a breakfast staple that you must try is gravy and biscuits – soft dough biscuits with sausages and a meat gravy… Now, this meal would set you up for a day of exploration!
Explore Natchez
Considered the birthplace of Mississippi, Natchez is a must-see destination along the river. Its heritage has been shaped by people of French, African, British and Spanish descent, however, its first inhabitants were the Natchez Indians, of whom the city was named after. You’ll learn about Mississippi’s oldest city, and discover the long-fought wars over this settlement and why Natchez was of integral importance to the cotton industry.
Go back to the past at Nottoway
Trips down the Mississippi river wouldn’t be complete without visiting one of the largest antebellum houses in the South, and the largest surviving plantation house in Louisiana – Nottoway. Standing on the west back of the Mississippi, this impressive property has a staggering 64 rooms and is styled on this Greek-Italian style mansion. But despite its grandeur, it hides a dark legacy – the original owner John Randolph was one of the largest slave owners in the region.
