Originally called Kettuvallams (in the Malayalam language, Kettu means ‘tied with ropes’, and vallam means ‘boat’), these boats were once used to carry rice and spices to Kochi’s port. Now, they more often sail the waters on and around Lake Vembanad, known as the ‘Venice of the East’ for its palm-fringed canals and backwaters.
Traditional methods are used in their construction: the hull is made of aanjili wooden planks, held together by ropes of coconut fibre, while bamboo poles and palm leaves make up the roof. The exterior of the boat is painted with protective coats of cashew nut oil.
A lounge and deck area is set up with cushioned chairs for taking in the views as you gently glide through the water.
