Day 2 - Kochi

This morning, we touch down in the port city of Kochi and check into our first CGH Earth hotel of the tour, Casino Hotel CGH Earth, located on the historic Willingdon Island. A city rich in history, Kochi has long been a crossroads of cultures, where traders from around the world once bartered for spices and treasures. This evening, we’ll meet our guide for an itinerary briefing, delving into Kochi’s fascinating past and discovering why it became a key destination for merchants and explorers.

Day 3 - Kochi

This morning, we set off on a guided tour of Kochi. Our first stop is Jew Town, the heart of Kochi’s spice trade, where the air is rich with the scent of cardamom, cinnamon, and pepper. Here, we visit the Paradesi Synagogue, the oldest Jewish synagogue in the Commonwealth, built in 1568. Inside, look out for its beautiful hand-painted blue and white Chinese tiles – each one unique. Next, we step into history at the Mattancherry Palace, often called the Dutch Palace after the Dutch took Kochi from the Portuguese. Though modest from the outside, the palace houses some of India’s most exquisite murals, depicting scenes from the great Hindu epic tales, the Ramayana and Mahabharata – both of which contain mythology, philosophy, and moral teachings. We then visit the St. Francis Church, India’s oldest European-built church before later turning our attention to one of Kerala’s most iconic art forms: Kathakali dance. With its elaborate costumes, striking facial makeup, and expressive storytelling, Kathakali is a mesmerising blend of theatre and dance. We’ll learn about the intricate preparation that goes into a performance – sometimes taking hours – before watching this dramatic art form come to life on stage.

Day 4 - Kochi

After breakfast, we set off to explore the village of Kumbalangi, India’s first Integrated Tourism Village Project. Once a sleepy backwater island, Kumbalangi has blossomed into a thriving model fishing village, where tradition and progress go hand in hand. Stroll past coconut groves and lush paddy fields, watch skilled artisans weave coir ropes, and marvel at the centuries-old Chinese fishing nets, a legacy of trade with 14th-century explorers. The air is filled with the soothing sounds of lapping water and birdsong –this is Kerala at its most authentic. Next, step into the heart of local life as you enjoy a delicious, home-cooked lunch in a traditional Keralan household before returning to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to unwind – will it be a refreshing dip in the pool, a leisurely stroll along the shore, or simply savouring the calm with a cup of spiced chai in hand? The choice is yours.

Day 5 - Kochi – Thekkady

Today, we say goodbye to the coastal charm of Kochi and head inland to Thekkady, the next stop on our Kerala journey. En route, we’ll stop for lunch at the Manjappally Plantation Bungalow, a historic estate that offers insight into Kerala’s colonial past and its long-standing spice trade. As we ascend into the Western Ghats, the landscape transforms into a patchwork of rolling tea plantations, misty valleys, and spice-scented breezes. We’ll take time to explore a local tea plantation and factory, where you can see firsthand how those fragrant leaves go from bush to cup. We’ll end the evening with a cooking demonstration, learning about the local cuisine, cooking methods, and the unique spices that give the dishes their flavour. It’s a great chance to discover the secrets behind traditional recipes and even sample the finished dish.

Day 6 - Thekkady

Yoga isn’t just a practice in Kerala – it’s woven into the very fabric of the country’s wellness traditions. Start your morning with a rejuvenating yoga and meditation session at the hotel’s yoga centre (just book when you arrive). It’s one of the many in-house activities at Spice Village by CGH and is the perfect way to wake up your body and mind before breakfast. Later, lace up your walking shoes for a three-hour guided walk that begins near the bamboo grove. Leading the way is a specialist naturalist from Spice Village, ready to share insights into the region’s diverse flora and fauna. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. Take a refreshing dip in the outdoor pool, indulge in a soothing herbal massage at the Ayurveda centre, or challenge someone to a game of pool at the charming Woodhouse Lounge – there’s a free drink behind the bar too. In the evening, spend time with a local naturalist, who will offer a deeper look into Kerala’s colourful culture, cuisine, and incredible wildlife.

Day 7 - Thekkady

If you like, start your day with another yoga session. Then, get ready for a boat ride on Periyar Lake, where you’ll glide through the heart of Kerala’s famous wildlife sanctuary. Keep your eyes peeled for elephants, otters, and maybe even a lurking tiger along the shoreline. Periyar Lake was created over a century ago by the Mullaperiyar Dam, and today, it’s one of the best spots in India for wildlife spotting from the water. The evening’s entertainment will take place at a theatre to experience the Kalaripayattu, also known simply as Kalari – one of the oldest martial arts in the world. This electrifying performance is no ordinary dance; it’s a high-energy fusion of combat moves, acrobatics, rhythmic music, and storytelling, deeply rooted in Kerala’s rich heritage. Developed by the Nair warriors, Kalari is even believed to have influenced East Asian martial arts. Expect a dynamic showcase of skill, speed, and history brought to life on stage. Dinner tonight will be a special treat at the hotel’s 50 Mile restaurant, known for its amazing food and sustainable concept of using only local produce from within a 50-mile radius.

Day 8 - Thekkady - Kumarakom

Today, we travel west to Kumarakom, a tranquil retreat on the shores of Lake Vembanad, Kerala’s largest lake. Our final CGH Earth stay, Coconut Lagoon, is set among swaying palms, quiet canals, and abundant birdlife. And the only way to get there? By boat. Glide across the calm waters, passing traditional houseboats and fishermen casting their nets, a scene unchanged for generations. With its tranquil setting and deep connection to Kerala’s traditions, it’s the perfect place to unwind and soak in the beauty of the backwaters. Later that evening, as the sun begins its slow descent, we’ll set sail from the hotel jetty aboard a beautifully restored Kettuvallam – a traditional wooden houseboat once used to transport spices and rice. Drifting across the serene waters, we’ll watch as the sky erupts in hues of gold and crimson. As night falls, we return to the hotel for an evening of cultural performances. Experience Kerala’s artistic heritage through captivating dance forms like Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, and Ottanthullal – each telling stories through expressive movements and colourful costumes.

Day 9 - Kumarakom

Today is all about relaxation and rejuvenation. Start your morning with a peaceful pre-breakfast yoga session, setting the tone for a day of self-care. Afterward, dive into the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with an insightful session led by an expert, followed by a personalised treatment tailored just for you – an experienced physician will assess your body’s needs and recommend the perfect remedy. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Day 10 - Kumarakom

Enjoy your final yoga session of the trip, taking in the peaceful surroundings one last time. After breakfast, set off on an eco-walk around the property with a local guide, who will share insights into the unique ecosystem and the conservation efforts that help preserve it – from butterfly gardens to the centuries-old canals. The rest of the day is yours to unwind and take in the last few moments of Kerala – whether that means relaxing by the backwaters, enjoying a final taste of the local cuisine, or simply soaking up the atmosphere before your journey home tomorrow.
