Introducing the World Wonders
The Greek poet Antipater of Sidon is credited with compiling the list of the original ‘Seven Wonders’ of the ancient world, structures which were praised both for their beauty and for the exceptional engineering skills of their creators. Today, sadly, only one remains standing - the Great Pyramid of Giza. In 2007, an international poll voted for the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’, and each of these monuments can be visited on an escorted tour with Titan. These are true icons of world travel, familiar from countless films, TV shows, books and magazines, but nothing compares to physically being there, gazing over the impressive ruins of Machu Picchu, strolling along the Great Wall of China or seeing Rome’s two-thousand year old Colosseum standing right in front of you. Titan will take you there in style and comfort, in the company of friendly and knowledgeable guides and like-minded fellow travellers.
You could begin with the oldest and only surviving, of the original Seven Wonders, the Pyramid of Khufu at Giza, which you will see on an included excursion, led by a professional Egyptologist, on our Cairo, Alexandria and a Nile Cruise tour. Also on the itinerary are the magnificent temples of Karnak, Philae and Kom Ombo, the Valley of the Kings and Alexandria, where Cleopatra once held court. Those interested in archaeology will also enjoy Titan’s Jordan with Ancient Petra tour, visiting not only the fabled ‘rose-red city’ of Petra but also the well-preserved Roman city of Jerash, the impressive Crusader castle of Shobak, and the Biblical sites of Bethany, Mount Nebo and the River Jordan.
China is a country which is full of wonders, both natural and man-made, and its incredible Great Wall, named as one of the ‘New Seven Wonders’ is certainly high up on most visitors’ must-see lists. Come along on Titan’s Treasures of China tour and you’ll experience this architectural marvel, stretching for an incredible 8,100km, for yourself. You’ll delve deeper into Chinese history on this tour with a visit to the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, and Beijing’s remarkable Forbidden City, once the exclusive preserve of the emperor and his entourage.Highlights of India, an eight-day Traveller, by Titan, tour, will introduce you to the majestic Taj Mahal in Agra, as will Titan’s 16-day Splendours of India tour, if you would like to spend longer in this beguiling country. Latin America, meanwhile, is home to three of the ‘New Seven Wonders’ and you’ll see two of these on Titan’s fantastic 22-day Grand Tour of South America: the ‘lost’ Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru, only rediscovered in 1911, and the 38m-high statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, which has become a much-cherished symbol of Brazil. A visit to the Mayan city of Chichen Itza, with its striking pyramids, temples and ritual ball court, is included on Mexico’s Mayan Trail. Closer to home, Rome’s Colosseum, built in the first century AD as a venue for gladiatorial combats, is still an impressive sight, and you can walk in the footsteps of the Caesars on a number of Titan tours, including Treasures of Italy, which will also take you to the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence, and Venice, one of the most beautiful cities on Earth.
