Introducing the Spirit of Chartwell

Famously designed and refurbished for Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on the River Thames in 2012, you really can travel like royalty aboard the opulent Spirit of Chartwell. Teeming with elegance and finery, the vessel’s design evokes a classic luxury yacht with touch of Pullman railway grandeur. This intimate barge has a high staff-to-guest ratio, meaning every need is discreetly anticipated and attended to - so you’ll not want for anything as you sail Portugal’s Douro River.

As you glide past picturesque towns and verdant vineyards, you’ll indulge in onboard wine tastings, folk shows, cooking demonstrations and informative talks from local experts. Take in the views from the open-air sundeck, or enjoy an evening tipple (or two) in the piano bar.

On board the Spirit of Chartwell

Ship Specification

The Spirit of Chartwell carried Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee pageant – and it definitely has an air of regal grandeur about it. This luxurious liner almost doubles as a museum of marine history, with genuine pieces from great ocean liners on display.

The ship’s two magnificent portholes, art deco clock and bar stools are all originals from the RMS Windsor, which sailed between Britain and South Africa from 1960 to 1977. In the staterooms, wall lights are reclaimed from the SS France – one of the longest ever passenger ships – and feature fully restored antique details such as Royal Navy Ships badges.

Lavishly decorated with cream mahogany finishes, each cabin features air conditioning and a private en suite bathroom.

The saloon deck is where you’ll enjoy fine cuisine and an evening night cap at the George Bradshaw restaurant and adjoining Somerset Maugham Piano Bar. Upstairs, on the sun deck, the Charles Dickens Solarium and elegant teak sun loungers allow for al fresco dining and wonderful views of the Douro Valley.

The George Bradshaw restaurant/lounge and adjoining Somerset Maugham Piano Bar have large panoramic windows to admire the beautiful scenery of the Douro Valley. Here, excellent cuisine is served using the best of fresh, local ingredients. The seating is arranged from private dining with two seats facing each other, to shared dining from tables of four to eight. The elegant teak observation deck has sun loungers with alfresco dining. You can imagine how the Queen and her family must have felt as they led the pageant down the Thames on the Spirit of Chartwell last year.
