The official language is Mandarin Chinese, although many regional dialects are spoken across the country. Downloading a translation app before you travel can also make everyday interactions, such as ordering food or asking for directions, much easier.
The currency in China is the Chinese yuan, also known as the renminbi (RMB). Cash is rarely used in China, and card payments are not widely accepted in many shops, markets and smaller businesses. Instead, most day-to-day transactions are made using mobile payment apps such as Alipay and WeChat Pay, typically by scanning a QR code at the point of purchase. We strongly advise downloading and setting up Alipay and/or WeChat Pay before departing the UK, as these apps are widely used for everything from small purchases to larger payments. In many cases, vendors may not accept cash or card, so having a mobile payment option is essential.
Yes. China restricts access to some websites and apps, including Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). If you rely on any of these, it's worth researching your options before you travel and downloading any apps or information, you'll need in advance.
China operates on a single time zone, China Standard Time (CST), which is eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
Currently, British citizens do not need a visa to enter China for stays of up to 30 days. Entry requirements are subject to change and, while we’ll inform you of any significant changes that may affect your holiday, we recommend that you regularly check the latest requirements before you travel. It’s your responsibility to ensure that you meet all entry requirements for your destination, as well as any requirements that may apply on your return to the UK.
Tipping is not generally expected or required in China, including in restaurants. However, it is customary to offer a gratuity to your tour managers, local guides and coach drivers in recognition of good service.
China is generally considered a safe destination for visitors, with low levels of violent crime in most tourist areas. As with any destination, it's sensible to take precautions such as keeping valuables secure and staying aware of your surroundings, particularly in busy places.
A little preparation can make travelling around China much easier. Your passport is often required when checking into hotels, boarding trains and visiting some attractions, so keep it with you during the day. It's also worth downloading useful apps before you travel, including translation, navigation and payment apps, as some familiar services may not be available once you're in China. Before departure, check that your mobile phone can be used overseas and consider downloading maps for offline use.
Chinese cuisine varies from region to region, with flavours and ingredients changing across the country. During your tour, included lunches and dinners are typically served in local restaurants or hotels. Meals are usually shared, with a selection of dishes such as soup, rice, vegetables, fish and meat placed on a large turntable in the centre of the table for everyone to help themselves. You'll normally be seated at round tables of eight to ten people. If you order tea, it will usually be served as green tea without milk.
