Why Visit Cappadocia - Where to Go and What to See

Head to the heart of Turkey, and you’ll find the Anatolion region of Cappadocia - where its surreal landscapes seem to have been plucked from a fairy-tale. Look upwards and watch as the sky is filled with multi-coloured air balloons. Closer to the ground, be astounded by the honeycombed rock formations and myriad of cave dwellings that litter the countryside. Cappadocia is loved by all who go – and below, we cover more of its history, landscapes, and food. Can we tempt you?

A geological masterpiece

Cappadocia's dreamlike landscape is the result of millions of years of geological processes. Wind and water erosion have sculpted the soft volcanic rock, creating an otherworldly terrain dotted with conical rock formations, towering fairy chimneys, and mysterious underground cities. These unique formations aren't just geological wonders; they also hold historical significance. The ancient Hittites, early Christians, and Byzantines all left their mark on this region, using the natural caves and formations as shelters, homes, and places of worship. From humble troglodyte dwellings to elaborate underground cities, Cappadocia's rocky landscape has provided shelter and safety for centuries. Kaymakli and Derinkuyu are two of the most famous underground cities, offering a maze of tunnels, storage rooms, and even stables that once housed thousands of people. On our Ultimate Turkey - Istanbul to Cappadocia tour we’ll venture underground to find an entire chiselled-out city that lay hidden for thousands of years.

Floating high at dawn...

Cappadocia is famous for its colourful hot air balloons that gracefully float across the sky at sunrise. It’s why most come to the area and why we offer it as an optional excursion. The region's sweeping valleys and dramatic rock formations provides the perfect backdrop for this extraordinary experience. And even if you don’t get the chance to take to the skies, watching the sun paintthe sky with hues of gold and pink, as these gliding shapes drift through the air, is pretty special. You'll feel like you're in a dream. Not to be missed.

Take a hike

Cappadocia has several hiking trails that wind through its unique vistas. Whether you're an experienced hiker or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll, there's plenty to explore on foot when you're not discovering Cappadocia from below ground and above. As you trek through the valleys, you'll come across ancient churches carved into rock faces, concealed pigeon houses, and breath-taking panoramic views. Don't miss the chance to explore the Rose Valley, Love Valley, and Pigeon Valley, which are among the most popular routes.

Food for thought

Cappadocia’s local cuisine is a reflection of the region's rich history and diverse cultural influences. From traditional Turkish kebabs to hearty stews and delicate pastries, Cappadocia's cuisine is a feast for the senses. If you have time, enjoy a meal in a cave restaurant lit by candlelight, and enjoy the unique setting whilst tasting local delicacies.
