Nourish the mind and spirit in Sri Lanka

With our lives becoming busier and more pressurised in this modern age of fast tech, fast food, fast everything - it’s even more vital to take a step back and listen to our bodies. We now have access to so much information at a tap of our fingertips and our minds are being constantly bombarded. So it’s no wonder that more of us are becoming acutely aware of the detrimental effects of stress. For many, travel is the perfect antidote.

Being able to take some time away from everyday life, a break from the norm and to discover new and exciting destinations can be restorative. Sri Lanka is one country that promotes wellness and positive mental health with the practice of Ayurveda and yoga, to providing breathtaking natural landscapes and an abundance of wildlife to awaken the senses.

Breathe deeply as you set your eyes on stunning coastlines fringed with swaying palms and verdant green hills and feel at peace in timeless ancient temples – Sri Lanka really is the ‘Land of Serendipity’. Find out why travelling to Sri Lanka really will nourish the mind, body and soul.

Drink tea

Hands up, who loves a good cuppa? Well, us Brits drink tons of it. And in Sri Lanka tea is life. The fourth largest producer of tea in the world, travelling to Sri Lanka means a visit to one of the many tea plantations including Nuwara Eliya [which is also a stop on our Sri Lanka tour], also known as ‘Little England’ because of its colonial influences and stunning viridescent scenery. Ceylon tea has a rich variety of different tastes dependent type. For instance, black Ceylon has citrus notes, while green Ceylons are nutty in flavour. What they all have in common, however, is proven health benefits. The potassium in Ceylon can reduce blood pressure and keep the heart healthy. Meanwhile, it also contains anti-oxidants, as well as help cure chronic diseases and give the body an energy boost. So drinking tea really is a tonic…

Immerse yourself in nature

Being able to connect with the earth’s natural surroundings is a proven way of improving mental health and happiness. The synchronicity of natural spaces and the rich diversity of life can be invigorating. In Sri Lanka there are ample opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. Feel the calming effect of the rolling hills and the sweeping slopes of lush green tea plantations that envelop the countryside. Or perhaps listen to the soothing sounds of the crashing waves against Sri Lanka’s gleaming sandy beaches. Then there are the tropical rainforest peaks, as well as national parks. It would be impossible not to feel restorative benefits of being outside - from the warming effects of natural sunlight to exploring Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, enjoy the peace and tranquility.

Wellbeing through wildlife

Picture watching a herd of elephants roam free in the wilderness, or catching a glimpse of the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. Would you feel elated and overjoyed? Enjoying that exact moment and closing your mind to other distractions has a similar effect as mindfulness and meditation. A chance to disconnect, slow down and appreciate what is around you. Engage your senses in Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s most well-known parks. Expect to see elephants, herds of sambar deer, crocodiles and buffalo. And what’s more, the park has the highest concentration of leopards in the world…
