Grand Tour of Asia – 4 fascinating countries on one unique holiday

Our Grand Tour of Asia holiday is becoming more popular and it is not hard to see why.  In each area visited we include more than just a standard excursion, which adds an extra dimension to the holiday, plus with a UK Tour Manager with you from start to finish in addition to specialist local guides in each destination, you will really be able to get under the skin of these fascinating destinations, many with such an important British colonial history.

In Hong Kong of course we include a trip to the top of Victoria Peak to view the Hong Kong Island skyscrapers against the backdrop of the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, but we also include a delightful evening cruise along Victoria Harbour (which runs between the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront and Hong Kong Island) so you can marvel at the skyline during the ‘Symphony of Light’, where Hong Kong buildings are magically lit up and for a light show set to music.

In our second country, Malaysia, we do not just visit the city often abbreviated to just ‘KL’ and showcase the best of the old and new, but we also take a walking tour and stay in Malacca, fought over for centuries as it was so important as a key port for global trade, and whose centre is now UNESCO protected.

Singapore must-sees include the lovely botanical gardens, recently also added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, but we also include a stunning ride on what is one of the largest observation wheels in the world (nearly 100ft higher than the London Eye!). On a clear day you can not only see all of the small island state of Singapore, but also see out to both Indonesia and Malaysia too!

We also visit a museum in the Changi district of Singapore, which is both sobering and fascinating. It showcases what happened in Singapore during WWII, including the embarrassing defeat to the Japanese and what happened to those taken as prisoners of war, many who were forced to work on the construction of the ‘Death railway’, which is visited later on the holiday.

The Sampran Riverside resort in Thailand is truly unique. So peaceful and calm, where walks through the well-tended botanical gardens or a visit the organic form are thoroughly recommended. This then changes for a couple of hours when a large-scale Thai Cultural Show is put on and you are joined by many other tourists to witness this excellent performance. Then as quickly as the other tourists had arrived, they depart, leaving the resort back to its serene self.

Beautiful sunset in Phuket, Thailand

With a location to the west of Bangkok, it also makes the excursion to Kanchanaburi and the River Kwai shorter in terms of travelling time. We pick up the WWII theme here, visiting a war museum, cemetery, and take a train ride on a section of the track that was constructed by the prisoners of war. A horrifying count of nearly 7000 British POWs died building this railway.

Our holiday concludes in Bangkok, a city full of life. Not only do we include an excursion to the Grand Palace, but we also include a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya river for another viewpoint of this bustling city.

Don’t forget that you can extend your stay before or after your holiday, and by flying with Cathay Pacific we are able to offer a range of flight upgrade opportunities.

Although she loves a lie-in at home, Laura is often up and about before dawn on holiday. She’s watched the sun rise over the Grand Canyon, Uluru and Angkor Wat, but her favourite was seeing the first light of the New Year sweeping across the yacht-dotted waters of Sydney Harbour.
