In the 1960s, China, to me, was just a place on a very small map and somewhere to which I had never imagined travelling. Our retirement in 2010 brought a series of operations and a leg fracture, and this convinced us to make the most of our health, so we booked a holiday to China - Titan's Treasures of China - in 2014.
What an unforgettable experience! No worries from start to finish. Titan certainly looked after us, and our holiday was such an amazing adventure, so comprehensive and so well managed.
We had never travelled so far east, so were stunned by the fantastic architecture of ancient China as it contrasted with the new, modern high rise buildings. We loved the food and the tea tasting, and this has set us off on a journey to discover more about Chinese food and “proper” Chinese tea! We soon located a brilliant shop near us where they sell hundreds of varieties. We visited the pandas at Chengdu and this took us into a completely new biological environment.
We visited and learnt a lot about the ancient walls of Xi’an, the terracotta warriors, The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace and The Great Wall of China but we know now that this was nothing compared to what I have recently read on our return home. I belong to a French speaking group, so over four sessions, I have entertained the group with our photos of our journey through China with an accompanying dialogue in French!
I have tremendously enjoyed finding out even more about the sites visited so this has not only given me a real interest in ancient China but has also furnished me with a lot more French vocabulary! Although I can’t profess to have perfect French, I do know the group understood most of my dialogue and that they were all fascinated with our experience as I was asked lots of questions afterwards.
The terracotta warriors were breath-taking and I honestly felt they were going to walk up out of their pit and attack me. The vastness and grandeur of The Forbidden City was stupendous, and when my feet rested on The Great Wall I felt quite emotional that I had been given this privilege.
I would love to return to Xi’an and spend more time there, so well done Titan (especially our tour manager, Anita) for whetting my appetite for more Chinese travel!
