10 Breathtaking Sights On The USA's West Coast

The USA remains one of Titan Travel’s most popular destinations and it is easy to see why; tours such as California and the Golden West come fully loaded with incredible itineraries that offer a vast array of attractions that include the cosmopolitan buzz of San Francisco to the jaw-dropping wonders of Yosemite National Park and the Grand Canyon. We’ve cherry picked ten key highlights that should be included on any discerning travellers to-do list.

Redondo Beach, California

A city in its own right, despite existing in the Los Angeles Bay area, Redondo was once described as The Gem of the Continent. Its Mediterranean climate, swaying palms and golden beaches are the very essence of California. The waves that roll in from across the Pacific make this a surfer's paradise. Beach volleyball is also a huge part of life here and it may all seem rather familiar to you if you grew up in the early 1990s as this was the filming location for the hugely successful Baywatch series.

Big Sur

This 90-miles stretch of coastline reaches from Carmel in the north to San Simeon in the south. The famous Highway One weaves its way along a coastline of jagged cliffs and pine trees, every corner turned, and every bluff navigated reveals an even more breath-taking view than the last. It is the shooting location for hundreds of classic Hollywood movies including From Here To Eternity, The Limey, Basic Instinct and numerous Alfred Hitchcock films, The Birds, North By Northwest and Rebecca. Big Sur is also home to some of California’s iconic giant Redwoods.

The Golden Gate Bridge

Instantly recognisable, the Golden Gate Bridge will still take your breath away when you see it for the first time. At the time of its opening in 1937, it was the tallest and longest suspension bridge in the world. We recommend dropping by the art deco Bridge Round House Diner at the south-eastern end of the bridge for some great coffee, and of course, spectacular views.

Calico Old Silver Mining Town

Located just a short hop off Interstate 15, Calico is now a ghost town, abandoned when all the silver had been extracted from the mountain its built upon. Wandering through the empty streets there's an eerie stillness to what once would have been a booming hotbed of activity as prospectors flooded in from across America to seek their fortunes.

Monterey

The 17-mile drive along California’s central coast to Monterey is an incredible experience. Traversing the most dramatic sections of Big Sur, the city is tiny by US standards but packs a punch. The list of attractions is endless from the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, Old Fisherman’s Wharf, Pebble Beach golf course and Lover’s Point. Catch a ride on a whale watching tour and see if you can spot these amazing creatures. You’ll also be able to enjoy spectacular views of Monterey from the sea.

San Diego City

Located on the US-Mexico border San Diego is absolutely bursting with energy and is home to a myriad of fantastic attractions. Situated within the beautiful grounds of Balboa Park is the famous San Diego Zoo, regarded as one of the best in the world it is also the only place you’ll be able to see giant pandas outside of China. Head down to the harbour for a tour of the huge USS Midway battleship or take a cruise around the harbour for some fabulous views of the city.

Grand Canyon

No introduction needed here. There’s not much to prepare you for the sheer magnificence and size of this incredible place. If you’re feeling brave then book yourself a helicopter ride into the bottom of the canyon otherwise try the Skywalk, a crescent shaped glass viewing platform that dangles over the rim and offers unmatched views.

Yosemite National Park

The approach to Yosemite by road is along a long-wooded valley, seen for the first time the huge granite walls will take your breath away. The valley was made famous in the last century by the photographer Ansel Adams who captures the stark beauty and one of America’s great natural wonders. There are hikes aplenty and dome beautiful spots by the river to picnic and watch climbers, tiny as ants, slowly ascend the massive vertical walls.

Santa Barbara

Situated in California’s wine country, Santa Barbara is almost blissfully laid back, book a spot on one of the many wine trails and you’ll get to experience a day at one of the fabulous local estates with tastings, lunch amongst the vines and tours of the beautiful Spanish colonial houses. Foodies will also delight at the huge range of eating options from award-winning food trucks to super high-end restaurants, head to the downtown area, where the buzz begins around 6pm.

Oak Creek Canyon

Considerably smaller than the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon is a lot easier to access and just as stunning. Located in northern Arizona between Flagstaff and Sedona it is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Guided hikes are available along the beautiful Verde River that snakes along the valley floor.
