5 must-sees in the Amalfi Coast

People watch in grand piazzas while dining on spaghetti and fine mozzarella. Feel like a movie star as you sail on a private boat to the chic island of Capri. Take a moment to savour the Amalfi sunsets as the ever-present Mount Vesuvius is shrouded in amber hues. But there's so much more to an Amalfi Coast holiday than glorious views and delicious food. Sorrento

The gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is a maze of ancient cobblestone streets. We’ll head to the bustling Piazza Tasso, where we can watch craftspeople and lively street vendors. We’ll sip delicious limoncello and taste divine gelato. There are also several fascinating sites to see including the greenery-draped 14th-century monastery, Chiostro di San Francesco. The sea views towards Mount Vesuvius are particularly wonderful from Sorrento Park. From local pizza making to sunbathing on Sorrento's sea platforms, we’ll get the chance to truly relax and enjoy this magical town.

Pompeii

On our Italy holiday we’ll step back in time when we visit the eerie ruins of Pompeii in what is a fascinating and thought-provoking experience. When Vesuvius erupted in AD79, Pompeii was covered in burning fragments of pumice stone known as lapilli, and this means much of it is well-preserved. We’ll imagine what life was like back then, and walk down Roman streets, explore ancient shops, a laundrette, cafes and amphitheatres. See if you can spot the exquisite ancient artwork dotted around the site including frescoes and mosaics.

Positano

Gloriously photogenic, Positano is one of the leading stars of the Neapolitan Riviera. Pastel-coloured buildings in peaches and pinks cling precariously to the mountain face, while pretty wisteria hangs from elegant hotels, buildings and terraces. We’ll wander through narrow streets and admire the never-ending sea views. And browse the pretty shops for local wares, or even head to Positano’s pebbly beaches Spiaggia Grande or Il Fornillo – both excellent spots for a swim. From Positano we’ll also board a boat for a private trip along the Amalfi coastline.

Capri

Impossibly glamorous, Capri is a playground for the rich and famous. The island is simply breathtaking, with steep cliffs rising up from aqua blue sea, elegant buildings draped in bougainvillea and deluxe restaurants and cafes, as well as designer shops. We’ll channel our inner movie stars as we take a private boat from Sorrento and arrive on the island in style. We’ll soak in the cosmopolitan buzz of Capri Town, before taking the funicular to higher ground and exploring the quieter Anacapri with its exceptional views and serene gardens.

Mount Vesuvius

While Mount Vesuvius is still an active volcano – it has only erupted eight times in the last 17,000 years. And now, it’s easier than ever to reach the summit with nature trails and paths. We’ll learn about the fascinating history and geological facts about the volcano that famously destroyed Pompeii. But it’s not all about the mountain. The surrounding national park is home to stunning landscapes dotted with wineries and small farms. We’ll enjoy a light lunch and sip Lacrima Christi, grown right on the fertile slopes of the volcano.
