Amazing photos to inspire an adventure in Malta

The island of Malta may be small, but it’s big on adventure. There are Megalithic temples to tour, historic harbours to sail across, ancient underground cemeteries to explore, and a pocket-sized capital city that’s crammed with churches, palaces and an incredible cathedral.

And that’s before we’ve mentioned the coastline – think crinkle-cut rocky bays and a scattering of golden sandy beaches lapped by the sun-warmed waters of the Med. Cross to Gozo, the second-largest island in the Maltese archipelago, and there’s more to discover, like a hilltop citadel and temples that predate the pyramids.

Sound like your kind of place? You can find out more about the archipelago in our Malta holiday guide, but in the meantime, here are some of our favourite photos of magical Malta that might just convince you to hop on a plane and discover it for yourself…

Tour tiny-but-mighty Valletta

Valletta, Malta

Malta's capital is one of the smallest in the world, yet it squeezes in a huge amount of history. You'll want to devote at least a day to exploring - marvel at the marble tombstone floor and huge Caravaggio painting in St John's Co-Cathedral, peek inside some of the opulent palaces, and walk up to the beautiful Upper Barrakka Gardens for sweeping views. A cruise across the harbour is a must-do for getting an idea of Valletta's scale and spectacular setting.

Discover Mdina: the 'Silent City'

Mdina, Malta

This hilltop fortified city was once the capital of Malta. Step inside its butterscotch-hued walls and you'll find baroque houses, medieval streets and atmospheric alleyways. Strict noise restrictions mean there's something of a hushed air to Mdina, hence its nickname - the 'Silent City'.

Enjoy seafood and strolls in Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk, Malta

This busy fishing village in the south-east of Malta is a great place to come and explore under your own steam. Unsurprisingly, the restaurants here serve some fantastic seafood dishes, with fresh fish often hauled in that same morning. Traditional painted fishing boats are moored up in the harbour - their Crayola-bright colours make for some brilliant photographs.

Cruise to the Blue Grotto

Blue Grotto, Malta

This series of natural grottos and sea caves along Malta's south coast is simply stunning. As the name suggests, the waters here are a beautiful shade of Tiffany-blue - it's no wonder the area bagged a supporting role in Hollywood blockbuster 'Troy'.

Step back in time in Gozo

Cittadella, Victoria, Gozo

Sitting to the north-west of Malta is Gozo. It's just a short ferry ride away, and well worth the trip. In the centre of the island is the Cittadella (Citadel), a fortified town that crowns a hilltop. Built in the Middle Ages, its chunky walls hide Gozo’s cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace and a handful of craft shops and restaurants. A walkway follows the walls around the citadel, revealing spectacular views over the island.

Although she loves a lie-in at home, Laura is often up and about before dawn on holiday. She’s watched the sun rise over the Grand Canyon, Uluru and Angkor Wat, but her favourite was seeing the first light of the New Year sweeping across the yacht-dotted waters of Sydney Harbour.
