5 reasons to visit the country of Georgia

Tucked away in the Caucasus region, right at the crossroads where Europe merges with Asia, you'll find the country of Georgia [not to be confused with the USA state]. It's relatively untouched by tourism, brimming with culture, history, and natural beauty. So, why should you pack your bags and head to this fascinating destination? Here’s five compelling reasons why you should visit Georgia.

Timeless heritage

Tibilisi, Georgia
Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia

Georgia's timeless charm will sweep you off your feet. Tbilisi, the capital, is one of the key cities in Georgia to visit – and for good reason. It has an infectious atmosphere, an energetic fusion of old and new, where the scent of freshly baked bread mingles with the aroma of exotic spices. You can easily lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets adorned with colourful balconies, pretty wooden houses, cosy cafes, and ancient stone churches – including the very photogenic Sioni Cathedral. And then, there's Mtskheta, a medieval gem nestled amidst lush greenery, proudly showcasing its UNESCO World Heritage status. Here, time will seem to stand still as you explore age-old churches, formidable fortresses, and serene monasteries.

Spectacular natural beauty

Look up any photo of Georgia, and you’ll be impressed with its breathtaking landscapes. And they’re even better in real life. From lush green valleys and pristine alpine lakes to dramatic gorges and snow-capped peaks. Hike through the stunning trails of Kazbegi National Park for panoramic views of Mount Kazbek or surround yourself with the surreal beauty of the colourful rainbow hills of the David Gareja Monastery.  For 360-degree panoramas of the Caucasus Mountains, take a 4WD up to Gergeti Sameba Church, which sits high on a hillside. Heading back down by foot is also worth the 40-minute walk for the views.

Georgia has an unforgettable blend of history, hospitality, and natural beauty. Georgia blew me away and was nothing what I expected. The thing which has stuck with me is the depth of history and the incredible hospitality shown throughout my time there. If I could offer one piece of advice it would be to try Churchkhela – a homemade Georgia product made from grape juice and walnuts, it’s a truly delicious snack. - Phil Ellis, Touring Product Manager

Wine wonderland

Wine tasting in Vineyard

Here, wine isn't just a drink – it's a way of life, steeped in tradition that dates back over 8,000 years. Stroll through the stunning vineyards of Kakheti, the heartland of Georgian wine country. Here, you can taste some of the most incredible varieties like Saperavi and Rkatsiteli right where they're grown. They still use ancient techniques like qvevri, these massive clay pots buried underground where the magic of fermentation happens. It's like stepping back in time while sipping on something truly extraordinary. It’s a wine adventure like no other and Georgia's waiting to pour you a glass (or three!?) Cheers!

Georgian food

Typical Georgian food
Typical Georgian food

Georgian food is a delightful combination of flavours, drawing influence from the Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Caucasian culinary traditions. Sink your teeth into khachapuri, a cheesy delight that's more than just bread – it's a national treasure. Then there's khinkali, these little pockets of joy bursting with all sorts of savoury goodness. And let's not forget about pkhali, a rainbow of vegetable pâtés that's as visually stunning as it is delicious. In Georgia, food isn't just sustenance; it's a celebration of life, love, and the joy of sharing a meal with friends and family.

Warm hospitality

It’s the warmth and hospitality of the Georgian people that truly sets this country apart. From the moment you set foot on Georgian soil, you'll be welcomed with open arms and genuine smiles. Whether you're sharing a meal with a local family or striking up a conversation with a stranger on the street, you can’t help but be touched by their kindness and generosity.

We offer several escorted tours to Georgia, some of which also include stops in nearby countries such as Azerbaijan and Armenia. So why wait? Pack your bags, and let Georgia work its magic on you.
