Ocean Cruising versus River Cruising

Cruise holidays are more popular today than they have ever been, from ocean-going adventures voyaging to the far corners of the planet to leisurely river cruises along Europe’s beautiful waterways. It’s a relaxing way to see the world, with no need to continually pack and unpack as you head to new destinations. The scenery changes daily and your ship’s restaurant, bar and other facilities are all close at hand.

What’s the difference between river cruising and ocean cruising?

There are actually very few similarities, other than they’re both on water.

Ocean Cruises

Where to? We offer cruises that allow you to explore the British coast, meet the penguins of Antarctica, and discover the many, diverse countries between. Some destinations have a shallow port, meaning that a tender service will be used to take you ashore, and coaches are often required to access the city centres. But must see destinations like the fjords of Norway and the rivers of France are wide enough and deep enough to allow smaller ocean cruise ships to sail inland. Other than that, most ocean ships are able to accommodate guests with walking difficulties.

River Cruises

Where to? The world’s waterways link some of our greatest destinations. We cover a web of Europe’s waterways that flow through the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, France and Russia. The list of great cities they pass are even more extensive; and that’s not forgetting all the quaint towns, medieval castles and vineyards that you’ll have chance to admire from afar or close up on an excursion. Being able to dock right in the city centre makes it really easy to disembark and find that city’s highlights, just a short walk away.
There’s plenty to cover outside of Europe too – the Mississippi, the Yangtze and the Nile for example.

Where can an Ocean Cruise depart?

Where from? Many ocean cruises start at UK ports. While Southampton is the most popular, we sail from ports across the country, including Newcastle and Liverpool. Cruises outside Europe, and some of the European itineraries on smaller vessels, begin with a flight from your chosen UK airport. But wherever you depart from, our VIP door-to-door travel service will get you there in style.

Where can a river cruise depart?

Where from? Most river cruise holidays begin with a flight to your chosen country, however for those who prefer not to fly, we offer a selection of itineraries that include coach travel from Dover to Amsterdam or Cologne, via the Channel Tunnel or ferry. Wherever you depart from, our VIP door-to-door travel service will start your journey in comfort.

On an Ocean Cruise

Ship sizes vary our partners’ ocean ships can hold anything from 25 passengers, sailing through the islands of Croatia with Katarina Line, to 2,106 passengers, sailing along the coast of Canada and Alaska with Holland America.

On a River Cruise

Our partners’ river ships can hold anything from 22 passengers, meandering through the gentle waterways of France, to 436 passengers aboard a paddle steamer along the Mississippi. The river sizes restrict the ship sizes, so the majority hold fewer than 150 guests. And it won’t take long for staff to know you and which beverage you prefer.
