We Love

Sailing on England's largest lake in the heart of the Lake District, Windermere.

Imagine a place so captivating that someone dedicates their life to recording its beauty. Alfred Wainwright found that in the Lake District - and we explore the landscapes that so enchanted him on our Lake District short breaks. We cruise Windermere, taking in the astounding views of fells and woodland that hug its shores, and enjoy a photo-worthy drive through some of the area’s most exquisite scenery. A day at leisure allows you to explore further on our Lake District holidays - perhaps pretty Ambleside or Bowness-on-Windermere - or relax at our lakeside hotel.

    Windermere & Haverthwaite Railway

We depart for Ambleside village where we board our cruise. Enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding hills, secluded bays and wooded islands as we sail down the length of England’s longest lake.

We disembark at Lakeside, at the southern tip of the lake, to join the Haverthwaite Railway. We take a short trip on this preserved historic line, built during the 1850s and 1860s to transport coal and iron ore at the height of the Industrial Revolution (if the railway is not available we’ll visit Lakeland Motor Museum instead). We’ll return to our hotel later this afternoon.

    • Cruise on Lake Windermere and one-way trip on Haverthwaite Railway (all day)

Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel & Marina, Windermere (4-star)

  • lkd day 3

Today is free for you to make your own explorations. Maybe visit Ambleside, a largely Victorian village built originally by Romans to defend the lower fells from the Picts and Scots. Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular 70-foot waterfall, is just a short walk from the village.

Or head to Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere, neighbouring villages that offer the opportunity to shop, dine or simply sit back and watch the boats on the lake. You may like to visit St Martin’s Church, which was built in 1483 and is one of the town’s most interesting buildings. The area behind the church, Lowside, is the oldest part of town, with narrow, winding streets to explore. You may also choose to rediscover childhood stories at the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction.

After making a number of stops in scenic spots to take those all-important photos, we’ll return to our hotel.
