Day 8 - Meeting of the Waters - Santarem, Brazil
Santarem is located at the confluence of the Tapajos and Amazon rivers, which flow parallel without mixing, creating two distinct bands of different-coloured water - one of Brazil’s greatest natural attractions. You may choose to join our optional cruise today, beginning with a view of this ‘Meeting of the Waters’, and continuing downstream to Maica Lake, where you might spot the rare pink dolphins. If river conditions permit, you may have an opportunity to fish for voracious piranhas while at anchor. In Santarem, the Museu Dica Frazao, which houses displays of local textiles, and the sky-blue Igreja Matriz church, built in 1761, are worth visiting. Late night departure.
Day 9 - Parintins
Early this morning we arrive in the little town of Parintins, located on Tupinambarana Island in the Amazon River. It is the site of the annual Bois Bumbas folk festival - the biggest in Brazil after Carnival in Rio. The port area has a colourful floating market with dozens of boats jammed together, selling fruit, vegetables, fish and local crafts, while the town is dominated by the huge modern cathedral. We leave early evening. Ship to shore tender service.
Day 10 - Manaus (overnight)
We arrive in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, this morning, where we will dock overnight. Known as the ‘Paris of the Tropics,’ Manaus is a bustling city of two million people in the middle of the jungle. Visit the opulent Renaissance-style Teatro Amazonas, which opened in 1896, or browse the stalls in the Mercado Adolpho Lisboa, which was based on the design of Les Halles in Paris. This evening we have an optional excursion in search of caimans on the river - a truly unforgettable experience.
Day 11 - Manaus
You will have more time to make your own discoveries in Manaus today. You could visit the elegant Palacio Rio Negro, built for a German rubber baron in 1903, or just relax on the white sandy beach at Praia da Lua. We depart this evening.
Day 12 - Cruising the River Amazon
We spend a leisurely day sailing back down the Amazon and enjoying the lush jungle scenery. Immerse yourself in the remarkable sights and sounds of the world’s largest rainforest and keep an eye out for native creatures such as howler monkeys, giant river otters and scarlet macaws.
Days 13-15 - At sea
Relax and enjoy your time on board Braemar as we sail the Caribbean. Practise your swing in the golf nets, enjoy a cocktail at one of the bars and don’t forget the live music and cabaret shows in the Neptune Lounge.
Day 16 - Scarborough, Tobago
This afternoon we arrive in Scarborough, the largest town on the island of Tobago. Founded by the Dutch in 1654, it’s a bustling town, with some attractive colonial buildings and a colourful market, dominated by the 18th century Fort King George, which offers superb views over the town and the sea. Part of the building is home to the interesting Tobago Historical Museum, which displays collections of weaponry and local Amerindian artefacts. Our optional excursion today takes us on a tour of south Tobago, heading to the town of Plymouth and stopping to visit Fort James, established by the British in the 1760s. We will also pass Store Bay, considered one of the most picturesque spots on the island. We leave this evening.
Bridgetown - In flight
We disembark Braemar this morning and join an island tour of Barbados, which will include a buffet lunch and tour at the Sunbury Plantation before our onward transfer to the airport for our direct, scheduled British Airways overnight flight to London.
Arrive at London Gatwick Airport, where you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
