Day 2 - Cruising Western Scheldt River - Antwerp, Belgium (overnight)
This morning we cruise up the Western Scheldt River, in the Dutch province of Zeeland, crossing into Belgium in the afternoon, and docking in Antwerp for the night. As well as being the centre of the world’s cut diamond trade, Antwerp is a charming, cultured city with more than 20 museums and wonderful medieval architecture. The Gothic Cathedral of our Lady is the city’s centrepiece, while the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, with paintings by Rubens, van Dyck, Magritte and others, is well worth visiting.
Day 3 - Antwerp - cruising Western Scheldt River - Ghent-Terneuzen Canal - Ghent (overnight)
There will be more time to enjoy the sights of Antwerp this morning before we set sail this afternoon, cruising back along the Western Scheldt River and the Ghent Terneuzen Canal to the beautiful city of Ghent, where we dock overnight.
Day 4 - Ghent - cruising Ghent-Terneuzen Canal
Ghent is a relatively compact city which is easy to explore either on foot or on the tram, and there is plenty to see and enjoy in and around the well-preserved medieval centre. Highlights include St Bavo’s Cathedral, which houses the Ghent Altarpiece, a Renaissance masterpiece painted by Jan van Eyck in the 1430s, and the 12th century Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts). This evening we cruise back along the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal.
Day 5 - Cruising the Nieuwe Maas - Rotterdam, Netherlands
Early this morning we cruise along the Nieuwe Maas, a 24 kilometre-long distributary of the River Rhine, towards Rotterdam, Europe’s biggest international cargo port. Rotterdam is also renowned for its innovative modern architecture such as the famous Erasmus Bridge and the curious Cube Houses. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen houses a treasure trove of art or you might like to visit the nearby UNESCO-listed Windmills of Kinderdijk.
Day 6 - Cruising North Sea Canal - Amsterdam
One of the Netherlands’ busiest shipping lanes, the North Sea Canal was opened in 1876 to serve as a direct link between Amsterdam and the North Sea and we enjoy a leisurely cruise along this waterway this morning towards the Dutch capital, famous for its extensive canals and many fine museums. View the vast collection of works on show at the Van Gogh Museum and the priceless treasures of the Rijksmuseum or take a trip to out of the city to the beautiful tulip-filled Keukenhof Gardens.
Day 7 - At sea
