SummaryAustria has long proved popular with Christmas visitors for its Alpine scenery, warm hospitality and delicious cakes, pastries and indulgent hot chocolate. Salzburg, nestling majestically along the banks of the Salzach River, displays all the grandeur associated with a city that prospered during the reign of Emperor Franz-Josef. Its fine buildings line the narrow cobbled streets and the famous Getreidegasse is renowned for the wrought iron signs that adorn this lively shopping thoroughfare. Salzburg is, of course, the native city of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His music is readily heard, and both his birthplace and house are close to the centre of town.

Christmas Eve - Salzburg
A guided half day tour takes us around Old Salzburg, an elegant and spacious town set before a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery. The old town is overlooked by the fortress of Hohensalzburg, a former stronghold of the Prince-Archbishops, which was used as a safe retreat during the war between the Empire and the Church. The 17th century cathedral is a fine example of the Baroque style, and the best features of the Italian Renaissance. At this time of year the Cathedral and Residenz Squares host a traditional Christmas market with wooden huts selling local food and drink specialities and Christmas gifts.
This evening we have a festive four course Christmas Eve dinner at our hotel. Your tour manager will have details of local churches where you may wish to join in with the Christmas celebrations.
Christmas Day - Salzburg
A day at leisure to indulge, with a Christmas turkey lunch. A wander along the Salzach River bank is an ideal way to walk off lunch and enjoy the views up to the castle and mountains.
Boxing Day - Oberndorf - St Wolfgang
We travel north to Oberndorf, where ‘Silent Night, Holy Night’ was performed for the first time in 1818. We have included a visit to the Silent Night Chapel and the Silent Night Museum, where you’ll find out about the much-loved Christmas carol and have the opportunity to hear it in many different languages. The museum has its own post office during the Advent period where your Christmas post can be sent with a special stamp and postmark.
Then a romantic, afternoon sleigh ride takes you from St Wolfgang, an enchanting village that has welcomed pilgrims since the 12th century, through the beautiful countryside, and includes warming Glühwein.
Bad Ischl - Hallstatt
This morning we visit Bad Ischl, in the heart of the Salzkammergut Valley. This spa resort became fashionable when Franz-Josef established his summer residence here during the 18th century. This afternoon we continue our journey through Bad Goisern and along the shores of Lake Hallstatt to our final visit of the day. The village of Hallstatt clings to the steep foothills of the Dachstein Mountains. Salt has been mined here since Neolithic times and has provided a continuous source of activity.
Day 6 Salzburg - Munich - UK
We transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Upon arrival your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
