On this voyage, we’ll sail up the Tagus River to Lisbon, Portugal’s elegant capital, then cruise to Madeira, where we’ll dock in the heart of Funchal to explore parks, squares and cobbled lanes. The Canary Islands are next; admire volcanic terrain in Tenerife, trek through pine forests in La Palma, retrace Christopher Columbus’ footsteps in La Gomera, and see Fuerteventura’s plutonic rock formations. On board, be inspired by tales of adventure and hopefully spot whales and dolphins from the deck.

Day 4 - Lisbon, Portugal

Cruise under the 25 de Abril suspension bridge, often compared to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, to reach Portugal’s elegant capital. Renowned for its array of architectural styles, in particular the Moorish Alfama district, Lisbon contains a host of must-see attractions. Explore the colourful 18th century squares and you'll be rewarded with such historical delights as Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Monument to the Discoveries - both reminders of Portugal’s seafaring prowess.

Day 6 - Funchal, Madeira

Set around a grand bay, Funchal offers elegant squares, a striking cathedral, subtropical gardens and broad avenues. While here, be sure to enjoy a glass of Madeira wine at one of the pavement cafés or, for an even better taste of the island, join a cookery class. Outdoor lovers are sure to enjoy a trip into the mountains on a levada walk, which will follow man-made water channels through forests that give way to panoramic views.

Spirit of Discovery

Day 7 - Santa Cruz, Tenerife

Tenerife features landscapes that range from forests of eucalyptus and pine, to otherworldly black-sand beaches. Spain’s highest peak, Mount Teide, towers above them all. You can spend your time strolling around Santa Cruz, the capital, and admiring the ornate 16th century architecture, or perhaps join an island sightseeing tour. Alternatively, explore the north’s stunning natural scenery on a hiking tour in La Rambla de Castro, which encompasses palm groves and passes over coastal cliffs.

Spirit of Discovery

Day 8 - Santa Cruz, La Palma

By far the greenest of the Canaries, La Palma is often known as the 'Isla Bonita' or beautiful island. From the fertile orchards and verdant forests of the north, to the dramatic black wilderness of the south, the island offers a wealth of contrasting landscapes, while its capital, Santa Cruz, sits in an amphitheatre on the slope of a volcanic crater. Explore here or join a trek to pass through pine forests and volcanic areas. Afterwards, enjoy tasty tapas at a local restaurant.

Spirit of Discovery

Day 9 - San Sebastian, La Gomera

Fuerteventura’s capital is a bustling port with whitewashed buildings and a collection of outdoor works by local artists - you’ll be able to see at least one, a giant seashell, right by the harbour. Go shopping in pedestrianised Calle Primero de Mayo, relax on the Blue Flag beach or opt to join a nature walk to discover the island’s rock formations and traditional pastoral architecture.
