Join us for a week’s immersion into fascinating Euskal Herria (the Land of Basque Speakers). We step out each day from our base in Bilbao, beginning with a city walking tour and glimpse of Frank Gehry’s shimmeringly innovative Guggenheim Museum. We explore the stunning churches of the region’s capital, Vitoria, and head to San Sebastián for spectacular beaches and equally spectacular food. And then onto La Rioja, where you can sample the much-loved red wine in its region of origin.

This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Bilbao, taking in sights such as the Casco Viejo (the Old Town), the 14th century cathedral, the neo-classical Plaza Nueva and the baroque opera house. This afternoon you may choose to wander the world-famous Guggenheim Bilbao Museum.
We spend today in the Spanish Basque Country’s unofficial capital and seat of its parliament, Vitoria. We take in the sights of the old town and the charming city park on a guided tour.
A day to explore at leisure. Alternatively, you might like to join an optional excursion.
Today we travel to the coastal city of San Sebastián, known as Donostia in the Basque language. The city is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, thriving culture scene and fine-dining establishments. Our guided tour this morning takes in all the highlights. For 2020 we have included a guided introduction to the Basque version of tapas - pintxos. We’ll taste two local pintxos and wash them down with a glass of wine, cider, beer, water or soft drink.
The day takes us to the province of La Rioja, a region noted for its high-quality wine. We stop en route at the medieval walled hill town of Laguardia, surrounded by vineyards. Here we’ll visit the 14th century Church of Santa Maria de los Reyes and we’ve been granted special access to its portico, virtually unique as one of only a few original polychromed church porticos remaining in Spain. Continuing to Paganos, we’ll enjoy a tour and tasting at two bodegas. Our second stop at Casa Primicia, set within the 11th century town walls, will include a private tour, a hearty lunch and free-flowing wine.
You are free to explore independently today, or you could choose to join our optional tour to the beach suburb of Getxo. Taking the metro, the walking tour will take you to the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known by locals as the Puente Colgante, meaning ‘Hanging Bridge’. You’ll then stroll along the promenade to the old fishing port of Algorta, where you can stop for refreshments along the narrow streets of whitewashed façades with brightly coloured trimmings, before returning to Bilbao by Metro. We’ll gather this evening (2020 only) for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. We’ll enjoy sharing platters that typify the Basque way of dining - the delicious choices may include Iberian hams, stuffed peppers, Spanish omelette, meatballs and chorizo sausages.
