UK - Ljubljana - Portorož
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your flight to Ljubljana. On arrival we’ll drive to Slovenia’s coast and the spa town of Portorož, where we’ll stay at the Grand Hotel Portorož (4-star). Enjoy a welcome drink with time to relax before dinner this evening.
Grand Hotel Portorož (4-star)
This morning we’ll journey by boat along the country’s sparkling coastline and across Piran Bay to Piran, one of the prettiest towns on the Adriatic Coast. We’ll have time to explore this historic gem of Venetian Gothic architecture, its bell tower resembling that of St Mark’s in Venice, before returning to Portorož.
Today is free to enjoy the historic health resort of Portorož, a destination that has been popular for its rejuvenating natural resources since the 13th century. Alternatively, take an optional excursion to Postojna caves, one of the world’s most beautiful cave systems, decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. An electric train takes you into the caves and a guide than walks you through the most interesting sections.
Stanjel and Lipica
Slovenia’s Karst region is rich in old stone churches, olives and vineyards. Our excursion takes us to Stanjel, an important Iron Age settlement and a strategic army base for millennia. We’ll amble through narrow stone streets with views of the medieval castle and the Church of St Daniel. We continue to the Lipica stud farm, where over 400 years of tradition are preserved. You have the opportunity to see the famous purebred Lipizzaner horses perform.
Spend a day at leisure in Portoroz. This ‘Port of Roses’ has a touch of the Italian Riviera, with cafés and boutiques and a floral promenade stretching along the shoreline. Its compactness makes it easy to explore at your own pace.
Trieste - Miramare
We’ll cross the border into Italy, to stroll through the town of Trieste, where you can admire historic buildings, the remains of the Roman theatre and one of the largest synagogues in Europe. Or simply spend your time people-watching from one of its cafés, whilst drinking delicious Italian coffee. We then continue to the majestic castle of Miramare, once residence of Maximilian of Habsburg and Charlotte of Belgium. We’ll view its grand exterior as it sits on a coastal promontory, and then wander through the fantastic grounds that incorporate typical Italian gardens. If you wish, you can choose to explore the castle’s rich, unaltered interior too (own expense).
Enjoy a day at leisure or take an optional excursion to experience the old Slovenian way of life. This excursion offers insight into olive oil production and the now preserved salt pans that have been mined for 700 years by traditional means. A little tasting of local wine and dried ham will complete your excursion.
Day 8 Portorož - Ljubljana - UK
We transfer to the airport for our return flight to the UK. Upon arrival your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
