You’ll struggle to find a better scene for your Christmas celebrations than the banks of Lake Bled, surrounded by mountains which will hopefully be blanketed by the season’s first snow. Slovenia is full of both intrigue and beauty. It also has some wonderful twists on Christmas traditions as we know them, including Christmas trees which were traditionally hung upside down from the ceiling and decorated with crops. Embrace opportunities to visit the atmospheric Christmas markets in Ljubljana, see magical nativity scenes in unique settings, and witness the legendary Christmas Day Sunken Bell Ceremony.
5 nights in hotel (accommodation as specified or similar)
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your flight to Ljubljana. On arrival we transfer to our hotel in Bled, Grand Hotel Toplice (5T), on the edge of its famous lake.
Together, we take a tour of the beautiful town that’s hosting us. Bled has a wealth of natural beauty and legends. We head up to the medieval castle, the oldest in Slovenia, where you can learn about local history and traditions. From the towers and ramparts you can also enjoy some of the most stunning views of Lake Bled and the surrounding mountains. Afterwards, you can taste the town’s famous cream slices in a café alongside the much photographed glacial lake.
Christmas Eve - Ljubljana
This morning we take a guided orientation tour of one of Europe’s smallest capitals. Ljubljana only gained its title in 1991, however, with 2,000 years of history there is plenty to discover. Ljubljana’s vibrant spirit is at its best during the festive season. During your free afternoon, enjoy the traditional Christmas market along the river bank, surrounded by the wonderful lights and festivities, and look out for the numerous nativity scenes in the city.
Christmas Day - Bled
Enjoy a leisurely morning before Christmas lunch. The park and promenade are lovely for a morning stroll. This afternoon, we take a short walk through the festively decked old town, before attending the Sinking of the Bell ceremony. While keeping your hands warm on a glass of glühwein, you’ll hear the legend of the bell, sunk in Lake Bled during a storm. Every year, locals dive into the lake to attempt to recover the bell.
Boxing Day - Bled
Today you can relax, and maybe take a leisurely walk along the beautiful lake, or take an optional excursion to Postojna Cave, an incredible collection of passages and chambers stretching over 20km. For a few days over Christmas, the oldest and largest living nativity scene in Slovenia takes place amongst the beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. As we walk through magnificent chambers, you will find 16 scenes graciously depicting the story of the birth of Christ, including the Assumption and the arrival of the Magi, joined by the sounds of vocal groups and solo performers from Slovenia and abroad. We may also have time to warm by the open fire and browse the Christmas fair which sits by the cave entrance.
Day 6 Bled - Ljubljana - UK
We transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Upon arrival your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
