Scandinavian Waterways & Capitals

A no-fly cruise from Newcastle

Though they enjoy the closest ties in heritage, language and culture, Norway, Sweden and Denmark present three diverse and enthralling travel experiences for the cruise holidaymaker. This Balmoral voyage stops in each capital city, with enough time not only to ‘see the sights’, such as Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid Statue, Oslo’s Polar Ship Museum and Stockholm’s enchanting Old Town, but also to scratch below the surface and do as the locals do. Oslofjord and the myriad islands of the Stockholm Archipelago add an extra dimension of scenic splendour.

Don’t forget to pay a visit to the Little Mermaid, the city’s best-loved landmark, while you could also learn about the nation’s history in the National Museum or discover the art treasures of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.

Day 4 - Copenhagen

You have more time today to explore the sights of wonderful Copenhagen. Watch the midday Changing of the Guard ceremony outside the Amalienborg Palace, the residence of the Danish royal family, take a walk around the old port area, Nyhavn, with its brightly-painted townhouses and excellent restaurants, or head out of town to visit Kronborg Castle, the model for Shakespeare’s Elsinore, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 6 - Cruising Stockholm Archipelago - Stockholm, Sweden (overnight)

This morning we enjoy a short scenic cruise through the vast Stockholm Archipelago, consisting of 30,000 islands, each with their own unique characters, before arriving at Sweden’s capital city, Stockholm, where we spend the night. The city’s Old Town, Gamla Stan, is a delight of narrow streets, cobbled squares and medieval houses, and there’s an enticing choice of museums, including the wonderful Vasa Museum, which house a remarkably well-preserved 17th century warship. Also worth visiting is the unique Skansen open air museum, with its collection of historic buildings, and the baroque Royal Palace. Ship to shore tender service.

Balmoral (3T+)

Day 7 - Stockholm

There’s more time to explore the Swedish capital this morning. Perhaps step into the past at the Museum of Medieval Stockholm or take a leisurely walk on the attractive green island of Dyurgården. We leave Stockholm this evening. Ship to shore tender service.

Day 9 - Cruising Oslofjord - Oslo, Norway (overnight)

Late this morning we reach the Oslofjord, a vast stretch of water that penetrates the southern coast of Norway from Fredrikstad all the way north to Olso, Norway's capital. We will pass a number of pretty islands, towns and bays as we sail into Oslo, where we dock overnight. Perhaps visit the National Gallery where you’ll come face-to-face with The Scream, created by the Expressionist artist Edvard Munch in 1893, or explore Norway’s proud Viking past in the Viking Ship Museum, which houses three wooden ships dating back to the 9th century.

Day 10 - Oslo

Discover more of the Norwegian capital today. Akershus Castle, built in 1299 as a royal residence and still used for official state occasions is well worth seeing. Inside, you can visit several impressive halls and reception rooms, as well as the church which houses the tombs of Norwegian kings. We sail this evening.
