Exploring Portugal’s Highlights

Get a real taste of Portugal as we explore a trio of very different destinations. First, we’ll spend a couple of days in Lisbon. Tuck into custard tarts, watch traditional fado performances and perhaps take a side-trip to delightful Obidos. Next, we’ll sweep south to the Algarve, for a laid-back day in coastal Portimão. Finally, we’ll discover Porto, where you can soak up city views from the hilltop cathedral, sip ruby-red port wine or cruise along the Douro on a rabelo boat.

Day 4 - 5 - Lisbon, Portugal (overnight)

The Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge is an impressive sight to behold as we arrive into Lisbon early afternoon. The city sprawls across a series of hills. For panoramic views, make your way to one of the many miradouros (viewpoints), or stroll along the battlements of the hilltop Castelo de São Jorge.
We’ll stay until late afternoon on day 5, so there’ll be time to explore further afield - perhaps take a tour to the medieval walled town of Obidos or pay a visit to UNESCO-listed Sintra. You might also like to enjoy a performance of traditional fado music.

Black Watch (3T+)

Day 6 - Portimão

Laid-back Portimão nestles around a harbour in the western Algarve. The pretty waterfront is a great place for a stroll, while the restaurants serve up delicious fresh seafood and Portuguese wine. Delve into the historic centre, with its churches and sunny plazas, for a flavour of traditional Portugal.
If you want to enjoy the Algarve’s famous beaches, Portimão is just a couple of kilometres from the lovely beach resort of Praia da Rocha. You’ll find a sweep of golden sand here, plus plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés.

Day 7 - Leixões (for Porto)

A short journey takes you from Leixões into Porto, a photogenic city clustered on the banks of the Douro River.
Take to the waters in a traditional rabelo boat (wooden vessels that once transported barrels of the city’s famous port wine), dive into the tangle of lanes in the historic Ribeira neighbourhood, or perhaps go for a port tasting at one of the countless wine cellars.
For fantastic views of the city’s baroque churches and pastel-shaded beaux arts buildings, head for the fortress-like cathedral. Set on a hilltop, it’s been rebuilt and remodelled over the centuries and now boasts a mix of baroque, Romanesque and Gothic features.
