This morning we will enjoy a leisurely cruise through the lovely Douro valley, arriving in the town of Régua this afternoon. Here, you’ll enjoy a port wine tasting at Quinta do Seixo, a 108-acre country estate with lush hillside vineyards and an interactive wine museum. All the port produced here is destined for Sandeman and exported around the world. Later, you may choose to visit the Douro Museum, which offers a comprehensive overview of the Douro region and its wine-making history. The AmaVida moors in Régua tonight.
Day 3 - Régua - Barca d’Alva
Today’s included excursion visits the picturesque town of Lamego, home to one of Portugal’s most important pilgrimage sites, the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Our Lady of the Remedies). The shrine features a staircase of nearly 700 steps, beautifully decorated with blue and white tiles. Other attractions include the cathedral, dating back to the 12th century and the town’s museum, housed in the former bishop’s palace. This afternoon, enjoy the wild scenery as your ship cruises through the dramatic gorges of the Douro river valley on its way towards Barca d’Alva.
Day 4 - Barca d’Alva - Salamanca - Vega Terrón
We cross the border into Spain this morning, for a full-day included excursion to the UNESCO-listed city of Salamanca, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, two cathedrals and a beautiful main square, the Plaza Mayor, built in Baroque style and surrounded by covered arcades. Our guided tour takes in the sights of the historic centre, with its characteristic golden sandstone and elegant architecture, before we rejoin the ship in Vega Terrón, for an overnight stay.
Day 5 - Vega Terrón - Pinhão
After breakfast, we visit the peaceful hilltop village of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, just over the border back in Portugal. Enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the ruined castle and take a leisurely stroll along the village’s narrow cobbled lanes, maybe stopping to admire the curious fountain known as the Chafariz dos Pretos, adorned with four decorative water spouts in the form of children’s faces. Return to the ship for lunch and cruise onward to Pinhão. This evening, there will be a wine tasting and dinner at a local quinta to enjoy. We moor overnight in Pinhão.
Day 6 - Régua - Entre-os-Rios
This morning, we cruise to Régua for a morning excursion to the Baroque Palacio de Mateus, built in the 18th century and renowned for its delightful gardens, which are considered to be among the finest in Portugal. Collections of paintings, ceramics, silverware and exquisite furniture are on display inside the palace. Lunch is served aboard the ship as it cruises to Entre-os-Rios, arriving this evening. Tonight, you will sit down to a traditional home-cooked Portuguese meal at the Alpendurada Monastery, perhaps enjoying a glass of wine as you take in the gorgeous view from the monastery’s terrace.
Day 7 - Porto
Your ship returns to Porto early this morning and on the included guided tour of the historical quarter - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - you’ll see the highlights of this fascinating city, including the Romanesque Porto Cathedral, the impressive main square and São Bento Railway Station, adorned with magnificent blue and white tile panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history. As a final treat at the end of your holiday, there will be a tasting of the locally-produced port wine, which takes its name from this city. The ship moors overnight in Porto.
