Day 2 Oberammergau

Oberammergau is a delightful town in the picturesque Bavarian Alps. We roam the historical town and visit the Oberammergau Museum, an exhibition of the town’s history and revered industry of wood carving, a craft which remains a main source of income today. Later, we witness what we’ve travelled to see; Oberammergau’s Passion Play. During the 17th century, the villagers of Oberammergau pledged that if they were spared from the plague, they would perform the Passion Play - a story of the life and death of Jesus - and have continued to do this every ten years since 1634. Today, it is world renowned and highly anticipated, with over 2,000 citizens involved in the performances that take place in an open-air theatre hosting 4,700 people.

Day 3 Salzburg

We head to the UNESCO-listed city of Salzburg, famous for many things including the surrounding hills that featured in ‘The Sound of Music’; we begin with a tour of the wonderful locations and historic sights used in the iconic film. Medieval and baroque architecture occupy the charming city centre including the 17th-century Frohnburg Palace, the grand Leopoldskron Palace and the magnificent Mirabell Palace Gardens. After lunch there’ll be time to leisurely explore this great city. Maybe visit the beautiful Hohensalzburg Castle, a stunning 11th-century fortress located on a scenic hilltop surrounded by a mesmerising waterway. Later, we arrive at our hotel.

Day 4 Salzkammergut

Today we visit the stunning lake district of Salzkammergut, to see the tranquil emerald-green Lake Fuschl and the delightful town of Mondsee, home to the baroque twin-towered abbey church used in ‘The Sound of Music’ wedding scene. Situated along the glistening shores of Lake Wolfgang is the village of St Gilgen, the birthplace of Mozart’s mother. We enjoy a stroll taking in the picturesque houses, glorious lush landscapes and magnificent mountain scenery. Complete the day with a scenic boat cruise to the pretty town of St Wolfgang and Austria’s deepest lake, the stunning Lake Traunsee.

Day 5 Hohenwerfen Fortress

Located on a high rock above the glistening Salzach Valley is the impressive Hohenwerfen Fortress, a well-preserved medieval structure built more than 900 years ago. Here you can take in breathtaking views of the surrounding area, gain a unique insight into medieval life, and discover the castle’s impressive Falconry Museum. Learn all there is to know about birds of prey as they soar elegantly and glide over our heads during a falconry display.
