Day 2 - At sea
Day 3 - La Coruña, Spain
Ancient monuments. Modernist houses. A busy seaport. Relaxing beaches. It’s fair to say La Coruña is varied, which is why we think you’ll love getting to know this seafront city. There’s no better view than from the top of the famed Torre de Hercules, at the far end of the peninsula. This monument is thought to be the only Roman lighthouse to still exist today.
Back on solid ground, take a wander through the impressive old quarter, brimming with medieval details. Don’t miss the great Church of Santiago and host of galleries and museums. Flanked with boutique shops and cafés, the seafront promenade is a lovely place for a walk.
Day 4 - Avilés
Avilés is steeped in history and architectural gems just waiting to be discovered. But don’t let its stylish city centre distract you from its roots - you’ll spot nods to its farming and maritime roots as you wander its pretty boulevards.
We love the pedestrianised Old Town, made up of several historic squares and plazas - perfect for a spot of people watching. Gaze up at the collection of historic buildings, including the Camposagrado Palace, the Palacio de Valdecarzana and the outstanding Gothic churches of San Nicolás and San Francisco.
Day 5 - Santander
Elegant Santander is as pretty as it is historic. Here, the sea and mountains make for a stunning backdrop, while in the city centre there’s a treasure trove of discoveries to uncover. Inside the octagonal cupola and Gothic cloisters of the Catedral de Santander, you’ll find the tomb of noted historian Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo and the crypt of El Cristo, a vaulted chamber with artefacts from the Roman era.
The Paseo de Pereda promenade makes for a pretty walk along the side of the Jardines de Pereda gardens. Elsewhere, the beaches are glorious with wonderful calm waters lapping at sandy shores. Seafood lovers should try the local fried squid or breaded whitebait, while cocido montañes (a stew made of beans, meat and cabbage) is a regional speciality. Muy delicioso!
Day 6 - Bordeaux, France
Bordeaux is more than just fine wine and sprawling vineyards, but it’s a good place to start. Perhaps opt for a tasting in the sleepy countryside, or spend your day discovering Bordeaux’s secret attractions.
Start with a scenic wander along the banks of the Garonne River to get a feel for this exciting destination. This UNESCO-listed city of art is home to some 362 historic monuments, with some dating back to the Roman times. Museums and galleries, squares and gardens. There’s plenty of time to fit it all in.
Day 7 - Cruising Gironde & Garonne Rivers
The beautiful River Garonne is one of south-west France’s most picturesque rivers. Take a seat on the top deck as we float though the French countryside, passing pretty towns and villages as we go.
Day 8 - At sea
