Christmas Eve - Venice
This morning we have a guided walking tour of Venice. You’ll quickly discover the hundreds of bridges (including Rialto) that link the wonderful maze of narrow streets, hiding little treasures and iconic sights. Learn about Teatro La Fenice, where Verdi premiered classics including ‘Rigoletto’ and ‘La Traviata’. Admire lesser-known wonders, like Scala Contarini del Bovolo’s grand spiral staircase, and impressive churches such as Santa Maria Formosa. Of course, we’ll also pay a visit to St Mark’s Square, penned by impressive arcades and the stunning Basilica. The afternoon is yours to explore at leisure - perhaps browse the Christmas markets, which fill small squares with craft specialities and the tantalising scent of festive food. Later, you might like to attend midnight mass (services begin at 11:30pm).
Christmas Day - Venice
Today is all about Christmas and indulging in delicious Italian food! A wonderful four-course Christmas lunch is prepared for us at the hotel, Italian style. After allowing time to relax, we’ll stretch our legs as we return to Venice’s most iconic spot - St Mark’s Square. It’s been a popular meeting place for Venetians for centuries. We’ll follow their lead and settle down in one of the elegant cafés, enjoying conversation over Venetian biscuits and a cup of tea or coffee. Listen to the sounds of nearby orchestras playing, and watch opportunistic pigeons squabbling over dropped crumbs out in the square. If you have room left for food this evening, a surprising number of restaurants will be open to welcome you.
Boxing Day - Venice
Italians celebrate Santo Stefano on 26 December with a national holiday. Although many shops are closed, it means that the streets are quieter for exploring on your day at leisure. Most tourist attractions, such as the Doge’s Palace and Correr Museum, are open. Gondoliers will also be happy to serenade with a Christmas classic if you choose to spend half an hour enjoying the gentle rhythms of the canals. This Catholic city follows Christmas traditions with the aid of passionate local craftsmen - there are many churches along the web of streets and squares, each with a nativity scene. We recommend following the Venetians to the free concert at the Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari church at 4pm - the perfect way to enjoy the choir, the historic church, and one of the most beautiful nativity scenes in Venice.
Day 5 Venice - UK
