Rome and a Classic Italian Cruise

An Iconic Tall Ship Adventure

Centuries ago, Britain’s wealthiest young men travelled to Italy in fine style as part of their cultural education. Thankfully, these days, such journeys are no longer so exclusive, but they needn’t be less luxurious. This outstanding itinerary follows two nights in the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome with a classic Italian cruise taking in the celebrated Amalfi Coast, Sicily, the Pontine Islands and the Aeolian Islands aboard the splendid five-masted and fully-rigged Royal Clipper - a vessel which, though ultramodern in construction, comfort and convenience, would have been instantly familiar to those ‘Grand Tourists’ of yesteryear.

Included excursions and visits: 1

  • 72-hour Roma Pass

  • 2 nights in hotel, 7 nights tall ship cruise on Royal Clipper (accommodation as specified or similar)
  • 23 meals: 9 breakfasts (days 2-10) 6 lunches (days 4-9) 8 dinners (days 1 and 3-9)

VIP Outbound1

London - Rome

Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your journey to London Heathrow Airport and a direct, scheduled British Airways flight to Rome. Upon arrival, we transfer to the Hotel Universo (4T), where dinner is included this evening.

Hotel Universo

A full day to enjoy the ‘Eternal City’ with the opportunity to visit its historic highlights, not least the extraordinary 1st century Colosseum. A 72-hour Roma Pass has been included for your convenience during your stay in Rome, which enables free use of the public transport system and free entry to two museums and/or archaeological sites of your choice, including Colosseum and Castel Sant’Angelo where you can avoid long queues at the ticket window queue. Your local guide will be available with ideas and suggestions of how best to spend your time in Rome.

Day 3 - Rome - Civitavecchia

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and a day is not enough time to experience its many attractions. So we have another morning at leisure to explore at your own pace, before we transfer to the port of Civitavecchia and the waiting Royal Clipper (4T). This breathtaking ship takes to the sea later in the evening.

Royal Clipper (4T)

Day 4 - Ponza - Palmarola

We make our first port calls in the pretty Pontine Islands archipelago, scattered across the Tyrrhenian Sea off the west coast of Italy. Just remote enough to remain unspoiled, it is a joy to discover Ponza Town, with its pastel-coloured houses and traditional fishing harbour, and the exquisitely beautiful coastline of tiny Palmarola, acclaimed by Jacques Cousteau as ‘the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean’.

Royal Clipper (4T)

Day 5 - Sorrento

Stunningly situated overlooking Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is a most delightful pleasure resort. Shop for traditional souvenirs - intricate lacework and beautiful ceramics, or head out on an optional excursion to the poignant and perfectly preserved ancient site of Pompeii.

Royal Clipper (4T)

Day 6 - Amalfi

The monumental architecture of Amalfi attests to its glorious history as a medieval maritime republic. Marvel at the Arab-Norman Cathedral in the heart of the town and the old Arsenal, now a fascinating museum; settle back with a coffee or limoncello in a bustling piazza and watch the world go by; or strike out on an optional excursion to appreciate the fabled beauty of Positano and the Amalfi Coast.

Royal Clipper (4T)

Day 7 - Taormina, Sicily

Yet another Italian gem set spectacularly between rocks and sea, the Sicilian town of Taormina enchants today as it did in the 18th century, when Goethe called it ‘the greatest work of art and nature’. Make your own explorations of its many treasures - including an entrancing Greek Theatre, or join an optional excursion to breathtaking Mt Etna.

Royal Clipper (4T)

Day 8 - Lipari

We sail from the shadow of Etna into an otherworldly volcanic seascape - the Aeolian Islands rise up dramatically from the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean and, after some hours to enjoy the lively town of Lipari, we cruise past the strato-volcano of Stromboli, which has been in almost continuous eruption for 2,000 years, looking out for nature’s fireworks in the sky.

Royal Clipper (4T)

Day 9 - At sea

Rome-ward bound, there is time to unwind aboard Royal Clipper and reflect on an unforgettable voyage.
