The UNESCO-protected Dolomites provide a perfect backdrop for a truly magical Christmas. This holiday is based in a traditional hotel, nestled in the foothills of spectacular snowy mountains, which are speckled with emerald forests and chocolate-box villages. Although it’s Italian by definition, a strong sense of Austria still flavours all aspects of life. Today, the two cultures sit amicably side by side. Locals speak both Italian and German; and you’ll often find pizza and bratwurst on the same menu!
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your flight to Innsbruck. On arrival, we begin our journey to a family-run hotel Rodengo, on the edge of the scenic alpine village in the foothills of snowy mountains. A welcome drink will be waiting for us.
Travel to the charming ancient city of Bolzano, which is markedly Tyrolean in atmosphere and home to Italy’s largest Christmas market. You’ll have time to browse, to the sound of barrel organs, amongst 80 or more wooden stalls laden with hand crafted wooden toys and delicate, jewel-coloured glass decorations. There will be time at leisure for lunch - a glass of mulled, spiced glühwein and a slice of cinnamon stollen bread will help you keep warm. Or you may wish to visit the archaeology museum, which houses Ötzi the Iceman, who lived some 5,000 years ago. We return to our hotel this afternoon.
Christmas Eve - Bressanone
Bressanone is the oldest town in the Tyrol. We visit the traditional market, one of South Tyrol’s original Christmas markets. Nestled in Cathedral Square, it’s surrounded by centuries-old buildings and dominated by the two towers of the baroque-style cathedral. Sample wine in a local venue, before returning to the hotel for a festive dinner. For those who wish to attend midnight mass, the enchanting Rodengo Church is just a stroll away.
Christmas Day - Rodengo
Enjoy a leisurely Christmas Day. A festive lunch awaits, and complimentary tea and coffee is served a little later with a homemade Christmas biscuit. You might like to take a break from feasting with a walk in the fresh mountain air. As you explore Rodengo, you may spot Rodengo Castle from a distance - a captivating 12th century fortress crowning a small rock outcrop, which shows the might of old medieval lords. Views of the high alpine pasture and the chain of mountain peaks complete the setting for a wonderful walk. This evening, we have live music and glühwein to look forward to in our hotel.
Boxing Day - Brunico
Fashionable flair and exclusive boutiques meet traditional South Tyrolean characteristics in immaculate Brunico. We head here to explore the Christmas Market, and take a break from perusing with a strudel and glühwein tasting. Apple strudel is a local favourite; recipes are passed down through many generations, each differing slightly in its mix of fresh flavours and aromas. If the weather is on our side, we head to Braies Lake for sunset. This is the largest natural lake in the Dolomites; ice cold and crystal clear, the still water reflects the mountains and changing colour of the sky with a breathtaking beauty that you’ll want to capture a hundred times on your camera.
Day 6 Rodengo - Venice - UK
Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Upon arrival your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
