Italian Coastal Explorer with Pompeii
Day 1 UK - Nice, France
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your flight to Nice. On arrival, we embark Azamara Pursuit® ahead of an afternoon sailing.
Day 2 Santa Margherita (Portofino), Italy
With a wide, palm-lined promenade and glamorous hotels, you’ll fall for Santa Margherita’s old-world charm as soon as you step ashore. It’s a pretty seaside resort once frequented by the big-name poets and philosophers of the Romantic era. But we’ll make the short boat ride to fabled Portofino - the colourful harbour is instantly recognisable and makes for the perfect place to stop for an aperitivo and watch the fishermen bring in the day’s catch. Perhaps climb up to Chiesa di San Martino for the classic photo with the town behind you.
Day 3 Portovenere
As you approach Portovenere, close your eyes and imagine classic Italian romance. When you open them, we don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Here, brightly coloured houses hug the harbour and the spectacular Castello Doria overlooks the town. Venture up the hill for panoramic views of the Gothic-era San Pietro Church, rugged cliffs and scenic harbour. Back in town, stroll along winding cobblestone streets to Grotta Dell’Arpaia, where poet Lord Byron spent some time during the 1820s. It’s easy to see how he was inspired to write some of his most romantic work from here.
Days 4-5 Livorno (Florence & Pisa) (overnight)
Livorno is the gateway to Florence and Pisa and you’ll have two whole days docked here to enjoy the delights of both. In Florence, elegant architecture and inviting piazzas are waiting to be discovered. For art lovers, Florence’s Uffizi and Accademia galleries are ranked among the world’s best. For the best view, be sure to climb the 414 steps to the top of the cathedral’s bell tower, or wander across the Ponte Vecchio bridge for views of the Arno River. In Pisa, walk along the picturesque streets leading up to the famed leaning tower. Perhaps stop for a glass of vino on the way - and don’t forget to pose for a photo in front of the tower!
Day 6 Portoferraio, Elba Island
Elba Island is one of Tuscany’s finest gems - and best-kept secrets. Soaring peaks and turquoise bays are dominated by the kilometre-high Mount Capanne at the island’s centre. Portoferraio is perched on the island’s northern coast and boasts an impressive collection of medieval forts, sandy beaches and traditional Italian trattorias. History buffs will love learning about the 10 years Napoleon spent exiled on this fine island at the Archaeological Civic Museum. Otherwise, wander the pretty piazzas or take a cable car to the peak of Mount Capanne. Whatever you choose, you’ll soon be wondering why Napoleon ever wanted to leave.
Day 7 Olbia, Sardinia
The name Olbia means ‘happy town’ and given its idyllic location on the stunning Costa Smeralda, it’s easy to see why. The cobbled lanes running off the central Piazza Regina Margherita in the old part of town are brimming with boutiques, wine bars and café-lined piazzas. Basilica di San Simplicio is the main attraction, along with some interesting museums. Sardinia’s pearly white beaches are just a stone’s throw away (a big draw for the jet-setters and film stars that frequent these shores), while the island’s rugged interior is cloaked in sweeping forests and aromatic wild herbs.
Day 8 Civitavecchia - Caserta
We disembark in Rome’s Civitavecchia and meet a local guide for a tour of Ostia Antica archaeological park, the location of the harbour city of Ancient Rome. Then, soak up the undeniable beauty of Montecassino Abbey - one of the world’s most famous abbeys, it dates back to AD 529. Arriving in Caserta, a welcome drink awaits at our hotel.
Day 9 Pompeii and Vesuvius
Spend today at the fascinating archaeological sites of Pompeii. Once a wealthy Roman town, Pompeii was buried in AD 79 by a huge eruption from the mighty Mount Vesuvius. Linger among the preserved artefacts and ruins to discover the day-to-day life of this once-thriving town. After all that sightseeing, you might be feeling thirsty, so we’ll stop by a traditional agriturismo (farmhouse) for a tasting of locally grown wine.
Day 10 Caserta
Today is completely at leisure to explore the town of Caserta. Reggia di Caserta is a must-see with sweeping gardens dotted with fountains and pools, plus the Royal Apartments are more than impressive. Or perhaps opt to visit nearby Sorrento. Cascading down a steep hillside overlooking the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento is a jumble of pretty backstreets and family-run shops selling trinkets, limoncello and plenty of gelato - everything you’d want from an Italian seaside town.
Day 11 Caserta - Naples - UK
Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. On arrival, your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
