On Spain’s south coast is Gibraltar, a British-controlled territory adored by the British as a home-away-from home, except with a glorious climate and astonishing views. Highlights include St Michael’s Cave, a fascinating system of glistening limestone caves, and the unbelievable maze of war tunnels that weave through The Rock.

Day 6 - Nice, France

The coastal capital of Nice is a lure for writers and artists, past and present, with its famously clear light. Along with the beautiful climate, Nice has a glorious Riviera atmosphere, beautiful architecture, delightful markets, a magnificent old town and an array of delicious restaurants. Visit the waterfront, Promenade des Anglais, where the glistening waters are undeniably a sight to behold, as well as being the perfect place to relax and enjoy the enriching atmosphere. Day 7 - Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Delve into history in the ancient city of Rome, which hosts charming piazzas, beautiful Baroque churches and an abundance of glorious galleries and picturesque palaces. Visit Rome’s exquisite gardens including Villa Doria Pamphili - covering 184 acres, this 17th century public park is the biggest in Rome - and Villa Borghese, Rome’s third largest public park where the Borghese Gallery is located along with 17 acres created around 60 BC by Lucius Lucullus.

Day 8 - Livorno (Florence/Pisa)

Bursting with Renaissance charms, Florence is an art-historian’s dream. Visit the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, to encounter masterpieces and glorious Renaissance artwork, along with works of arts by legendary Italian artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Botticelli and Michelangelo. You might also want to visit the mesmerising Duomo, a world-class cathedral displaying a distinctive terracotta tiled dome engineered by artist and architecture Filippo Brunelleschi. You can climb the hundreds of steps within the dome’s walls for a closer look at the magnificent artwork.

Day 9 - Marseille, France

Entrancing museums and galleries and ancient buildings are some of the reasons why Marseille is one of the most visited cities in France. The city boasts historical interest, having been founded by the Greeks in 600 BC, which is illustrated at the beautiful Old Port that has been used throughout the ages for trade. If you don’t want to indulge in history you can stroll around the charming streets admiring the beautiful architecture, colourful markets and enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the many appetising restaurants.

Day 11 - Málaga, Spain

The birthplace of Picasso, Málaga displays magnificent Moorish culture through its magnificent assembly of ancient monuments. Visit the famous Picasso Museum boasting outstanding artwork including paintings, sculptures and drawings, or arrive at Alhambra Palace, an example of beautiful architecture reflecting Moorish heritage having once been occupied and used by the Nasrid Sultans (1238-1492) to watch over their kingdom during their time in power. Another fascinating visit is the Gibralfaro Castle, a 14th century structure which once acted as a lighthouse and military barracks and is now admired for its historical buildings and breathtaking views.

Day 12 - Lisbon, Portugal

One of Europe’s oldest cities, Lisbon is a wonderful place to discover both history and culture in the delightful Mediterranean climate. Take a stroll through the city centre to admire the brightly-coloured trams, white bleached buildings and fascinating architecture. Belem Quarter is a popular attraction west of Lisbon; the historic riverside is renowned for being the location where the Caravels began their voyage to the New World in the 15th century. While here, be sure to taste the city’s famous local delicacy, Pastel de Nata (custard cake).
