Return to the ship for lunch and time to relax while admiring the scenery, as we sail down the Main River towards Würzburg.
Day 3 - Würzburg - Wertheim
Enjoy an included visit to Würzburg Residenz Palace today. It is one of the largest and most beautiful palaces in Germany as well as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site - inspired by 18th century Western Europe; it is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture with an interior lavishly decorated with ornamental gems and the world’s largest ceiling fresco. Explore the palace before enjoying the court gardens, no less opulent than the palace, and then the sights of the lovingly restored old town. We then sail to Wertheim this afternoon.
Day 4 - Wertheim - Miltenberg
This morning is spent in Wertheim, with attractions that include a princely court, a former prison for drunkards and one of the largest stone castles in Germany, now an impressive and partly restored ruin. Set sail after lunch for historic Miltenberg, a delightful town protected by its medieval walls and 13th century tower, with a marketplace that will delight a keen shopper. Alternatively, journey by coach to join an optional beer tasting in one of the town’s famous breweries, departing from Wertheim and re-joining the ship in Miltenberg in time for dinner this evening, while our cruise continues to the romantic Rhine.
Day 5 - Boppard - Andernach
We arrive into Boppard early this morning, situated in the upper Middle Rhine Gorge and given UNESCO World-Heritage status in 2002. It has been home to many people over the last two millennia, each leaving their mark in the form of castles, stately homes, churches, monasteries and parks. Enjoy exploring this picturesque town before we continue our journey along the scenic Rhine with an afternoon of sailing. We spend tonight in Andernach.
Day 6 - Andernach - Cologne
There will be the chance to join an optional excursion to see the world’s tallest cold-water geyser this morning. The Andernach geyser erupts roughly every 100 minutes shooting cold water up to 60m in the air and is truly an amazing natural phenomenon. Arrive in Cologne this afternoon with free time to indulge in the city’s wealth of attractions. From famous sights including the impressive medieval cathedral in the heart of the city, to museums of art, sport and chocolate, amongst a seemingly endless list, there really is something for every taste here.
