Berlin Mark Hotel (4-star)
Vibrant culture, buzzing atmosphere and a turbulent history to boot, Berlin is one of Germany’s most exciting cities - and we’ll waste no time in uncovering some of the best bits on our guided tour today. Watch tourists and locals zoom across Alexanderplatz on electric scooters; photograph the colourful graffiti that covers the remains of the Berlin Wall; take a moment to reflect at the Holocaust Memorial - just a few of the sights we’ll stop at this morning.
We’ll end our tour at Charlottenburg Palace, where one of the city’s prettiest Christmas markets is located. The regal palace makes for the perfect backdrop to this sprawling wonderland - some 250 vendors travel from far and wide to set up shop here each year. You’re free to spend the afternoon as you please, whether that’s at the market or otherwise. Perhaps warm up with a mug of glühwein (mulled wine) or a plate of currywurst as you wander past fairy-lit stalls - and don’t forget to look out for Father Christmas himself, with reindeer in tow.
A stone’s throw from central Berlin, Potsdam is the capital of Brandenburg. The city is known as a real garden haven - the sprawling parks and splendid palace gardens have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. If you’re an outdoorsy type, we think you’ll really like it here and we’ll cover off all the main sights on a guided walking tour.
The residents here know the opening of the Blue Light Christmas Market means one thing: Christmas has arrived. It’s the largest Christmas market in all of Brandenburg. Follow the scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine, lulled by the sound of carols as you wander through the market.
Back in the capital today, we head west to explore the Spandau region of Berlin. Known for its parks and waterways, this cobbled borough is completely charming. Our tour manager will accompany us on a walking tour past glittering lakes and to the 16th-century Citadel.
Around St Nikolai church, the Christmas market beams into life. The streets and alleys of the old town are transformed into a Christmassy wonderland complete with market stalls and a Renaissance fair. Musicians, entertainers and carol singers all help to build up the Christmas spirit as you pick out souvenirs and gifts.
